From our inception in 1881, the Connecticut Humane Society has remained at the forefront of charitable service to the State of Connecticut, enriching the lives of the citizens and animals of our great state. With the powerful human-animal bond at the heart of our work, our organization continues to evolve and expand to serve the needs of our society and to plan for the future.
The Connecticut Humane Society operates full service shelters in Newington, Waterford and Westport, and a pet hospital for people in financial need, the Fox Memorial Clinic. Society services include: pet adoptions, pet surrender, dog training classes, humane education, services for senior citizens, and volunteer opportunities. Clinic services include: vaccination clinics, low cost spay/neuter services, preventative wellness care, special assistance program.

Elizabeth R. replied:Always adopt! There is more support and many great adoption groups in CT. Search on petfinder.com or cthumane.org. pet store puppies are for impulse buying and usually are sick and have health problems that will start showing as they age. There is no support or follow through care and the dogs are usually from puppy mills. Dogs from pet stores can set a family back thousands of dollars in vet bills and often live shorter lives.The CT humane society is in Newington . They will help match you with a healthy dog and will assess the energy needs and personalities of your family to ensure the best possible match. Rescues will do the same. Many people breed their own dogs, but unless they are professional breeders and doing it to maintain the integrity of the breed, they often have great intentions,but aren't always well versed in dog behavior. It is important that you are matched with the right breed and energy level for your family or else it can be a very unenjoyable experience for you and the dog.
