Does anyone know what the SPTBG COUNTY SHERRIFF's policy/protocol is if someone calls in about a dog locked in a hot car? I don't want to call & tie up the phone line to ask if someone here can answer instead. Thank you.
EDIT: I do NOT currently have a situation where an animal is locked in a car. CALM yourself and read the rest of the post! Jeez, I would be taking action rather than posting on FB if there was an emergency situation.
I received this information from a SPTBG CITY SARGENT this morning to clarify the procedures. They speculate that COUNTY procedures would be the same but I was just asking if anyone specifically knew for sure.
Copied from my messenger:
SPTBG CITY SGT: "We go and evaluate. Try to page an owner. If the dog is in distress, we knock out a window and start treating it... and rush it to a vet if necessary."
ME: "awesome. But it is illegal for a citizen to knock out a window to save the dog? Needs to be done by an officer... would any charges like animal neglet or abuse by charged to the owner?"
CITY SGT: "Yes, owner would be charged . Best to let Officer break in. But I wouldn't charge anyone [for breaking the window, not necessarily the viewpoint of every officer. You take the risk of being charged for B&E]. Citizen needs to be sure the dog is in distress and video tape it [before breaking window]."
