Some basic car camping with one or two day hikes within 30 mins to an hour drive from the site would be perfect. CoTrex app for hiking. Mountain camping is VERY different from midwest camping. I suggest using the recreation.gov for finding camp grounds. They are cracking down on the jerks from last year who have ruined it for everyone else in the national forests so either make sure you are being perfect about Leave No Trace or you find an actual campground. Also, HipCamp.com was fun a few years ago and it made it so I could see an area even though the other traditional campgrounds were full.

There are just so many places in every direction and so many different criteria. Near the ocean, desert, forest? Full hookups, partial hookups, no hookups? Density of campsites? Might not be exactly what you’re looking for, but check out Hipcamp.com. I camped on someone’s private land out near Harrisburg through that site and we were really happy. It’s a good option when the state campgrounds don’t fit the bill.

Getting away from people this year in CA is as hard as it's ever been given the mobs hitting even the easily accessed dispersed areas. But there's a lot of land in the Sierra south of Sequoia and north of Isabella, esp if you avoid water which attracts CA campers like flies on poop for obvious reasons. Some places might still be smoke impacted though; haven't checked recently. As for campfires, you can't. Banned in USFS land throughout the state. And they're checking. The only plan is to not have one unless you can find a campground spot. And BTW, since it's your b-day (congrats) maybe try hipcamp.com. Tends towards glamping, but might get you a spot more to yourself.

They have a lot of listings for like tent cabins and such, yurts, etc. Kind of early to hit mountains, and anything near water gets very busy. In addition to the suggestions already made, might try up by Lake Isabella.
