Wendy M. replied:Rudy, I have an old knee injury from January 2009. The school clinic was free, and they said it was stable, so not an acl or mcl injury. I couldnt afford x-rays or more treatment, I was uninsured until April when I got Medicaid. I would have qualified for it for but all but 2 years in the past 10 - cut off is $16 k in Ohio. If i got pregnant, i could have had it years ago. I'm so thankful for it. I have rheumatoid arthritis and give myself an injection a week of a biological medication that is costs a bit less than $2,500/month. You might want to look into clinics at major hospitals. Most have a charity programs that is income-based. I was so poor I didnt have to pay anything, but uninsured people that are solidly in the middle class qualify for a percentage off of the cost of appointment, minimum deduction is 25%. Also, if you take medication regularly and you live at 150% of the povery line or under, you might qualify for free or low cost medications. The best website i've found for that is http://www.needymeds.org/ it has all of the programs from just about every medication. Most are now cost, but some you could decent percentage off. The Goodrx website and app are awesome to look up all the pharmacies near you so you cand find the best price. They have a discount card as well. Not insurance but it's something. Offline, Sam's club is almost always the least expensive. You dont need to be a member to use the pharmacy or buy alcohol. Sam's club has a great program that is totally worth the $100 plus membership if you take medications regularly that are expensive. That gives you up to 40% on generic drugs and a bit if an additional discounton brand names. For me it paid for itself in 1 month. Not all generic medications are cheap; I've been on several generic drugs that cost $75+ a month. The 40% off was so worth it, especially since it was already cheapest place to get the med in the area. Costco is cheap too, but I don't live close to one. I don't think they have the perk of 40% off generics with an upgraded membership. Sorry if this isn't applicable, but i figured this might be helpful for you or someone you know.
Wendy M. replied:1 more thing - if your doctor prescribes a medication that your insurance refuses to cover (after you filed to your rationale for needing a specific drug and your appeal is denied), needymeds.org may cover the cost completely or give you a discounted rate. Most are 3 month worth, so you can save a lot of money that was. It includes programs from the manufacturer as well.
