I go to Krispin's in Troy. The location is sketchy, but the guy does good work.

Give Larry's Foreign Auto a call, 30 Corning Street Albany, NY 12205 (518) 446-0646. They don't work on all makes however, so see if they do yours.

Fitzgerald's in Lansingburgh has never done me wrong. I had something similar go wrong with my car. If you explain the situation them they'll at least give you a good idea of their rate.
Bethlehem Auto Services in Albany. honest guy, gives you a break on the little things. fair prices for a trustworthy job.

Monroe muffler in Latham has always been great for me. The guys working there aren't trying to charge you for crap you don't need and they do good work.

Meineke on Central ave near westgate plaza. I didn't really want to take it to a franchise but the owner (bob) is a really nice guy. The pricing is straightforward and they guarantee that the actual cost will be equal to or lesser than the estimate. I've been going to him for a couple of years and he always goes out of his way to help me out.

I know its not in Albany but Gil's Garage on Rt. 50 in Burnt Hills is great. Not always the cheapest and they're often very busy so call for an appointment. Their mechanics are excellent and they don't try to sell you on things that you don't need. As others say...avoid chain you're places and most dealerships.

We've had really good luck with Albany Radiator on Western.

It's really hard to find an honest mechanic. I'd avoid places like SEARS or Midas. I've always had bad experience with them and they always try to rip me off. Kis-Kis Tire Center in Latham has always been fair to me. Excellent mechanics, and they don't try to upsell you every little thing.

The local vw/audi forum is www.roflwagens.com you can look around on there. I found a good guy from the site that's been working on my Audi for the past year or so. He's got a small shop in Schenectady, it's just him doing (not a huge shop), but he's done a bunch of stuff for me. I'm not sure how he feels about people giving out his info, I'll ask him. What kind of car is it? What kind of work are you looking at getting done?
Mabepossibly replied:
Depends what you want done. I had 6 VWs back in the day, including a 91 16v I used to race. I used Quality Foreign in Ballston Spa for most repairs I didn't want to do on my own. Paulie up here was great, but its been a few years since I owned a VW. I never had good luck or liked Hackels or Autobahn. Neither had a great reputation in the local VW scene back then. I've got stories but I'm not going to post them. Bavarian Rocket Science in Albany is top notch if you need anything performance related done. They are downtown a few blocks from Wolfs Beergarden. Amazing shop to take a stroll through if you are into German cars. There is always something amazing sitting on a lift. They specialize in German performance so it may not be the most cost effective place to bring a basic Jetta for an oil change. http://www.bavarianrocketscience.com
