Question from the Inbox ~ We are a family of 4 (2 kids ages 5 & 3) and trying to decide whether to live on post or off. Where would be the best and safe places to live...
Jennifer E. replied:
Aiea is not far from Tripler. Schools in the area get 7-10 ratings on greatschools.com. Any one know anything about Aiea? We move beginning of August for our second tour on Oahu. We loved living on post but I hear the waiting lists are insane right now!!!

We just finished our 1 year at Hickam Elem school and I have to say, our kids learned and did a lot more then I ever did at their age, lol! I feel as though our kids came behind coming from a DODEA school, esp our oldest who started 3 rd grade here. We all hear that Hawaii schools are terrible, but honestly, I can't complain with all that was done. Another thing mentioned by another poster on here, the teacher is the person who makes the biggest difference in your child--very true. We had some ups and downs with ours, but in the long run, she taught our child well for 4 th grade. The only thing missing from this school that we had in our last, is the language (ie: spanish). I wish schools would imply that at the elementary level rather then HS. One more month of summer vacation and back to school! Any Hickam Elem school questions, feel free to ask!

We just moved from Hickam back in December. While we were stationed there, we lived on both Tripler and Hickam. I would highly recommend living on Hickam! It's very safe and would only be about a 15 minute commute to Tripler. Both Earhart and Hale Na Koa are great villages/communities to live within. Earhart probably has the better/bigger homes, but we absolutely loved our home in Hale Na Koa. Both communities have playgrounds just about on every corner and activities offered in the community center to do with the little ones. My kids are not school aged, so I can't tell you from personal experience about the schools, but through our friends, the public schools are ok as long as you are actively involved in your children's studies. Enjoy your time there!

Laura Westover - you can limit the notifications and feed by hovering over the name of the page. A box will pop up that has three button at the bottom - the first is checked with Like, the second one may say Following, and the third says Invite Friends. Move your mouse to hover over either of the first two buttons. Another box will appear with where you can Unlike, but if you would like to follow the occasional feed click settings. You can then change how often you receive notifications. I've set many pages like to to only show when my friends post in my news feed.

Now on to the subject of Hawaii. I have lived in Hawaii housing, and outside of housing. In the early days we had to live out in town because housing was full, but the last time we were stationed there we choose to live out in town the whole time. We actually bought a house in Waikele. So for my two cents I get more house for my BAH out in town that I do in housing. However, that is a personal preference. My advice is find a real estate agent - )I know one, but I don't know if she helps people find rentals but if she doesn't I know she know who could help. I can give you her name if you like. - and take a look at what's out there in your price range. Then look at what housing has to offer. Here are some good websites about real estate, and schools to help you find out what area would be best for you. www.mIlitarytownadvisor.comwww.education.comwww.greatschools.orgwww.schooldigger.com Hopefully you'll find these useful.

Any recommendations for a Montessori preschool in Royal Oak and the surrounding areas? Anyone has kids at Four Corners Montessori?
Jodi D. replied:
you can do research at i believe greatschools.com they have reviews and ratings on montessori schools
Shannon J. replied:
Check out International Montessori Academy in Southfield. Their tuition is very reasonable and I was very impressed when I visited their open house a few weeks ago. My son is starting there next Monday.:-)
Jeanette T. replied:
If Four Corners is like their sister school Creative Montessori in Sputhgate, then they are not a true Montessori. They are state funded so they have to meet state guidelines. I'm not saying good or bad either way, but it depends on what you want.
Emily M. replied:
I have heard very good and very bad experiences at Four Corners.
