Where can I get a spare key made that won’t cost me an arm and a leg? So I have a Honda Civic and I need a spare key made. My only key is literally being held together...

Find an automotive locksmith. They do this all day long and for less than the dealer

Depends if your key needs a chip or not. Usually if it needs a chip you gotta buy/order it from the dealer. They typically cut it for u pretty cheap too but if u wanna try to save a couple bucks u can take it to Ace Hardware.

Most walmarts can cut car keys. They even have the blanks there. I have had a couple made at the wally world for cheap, like $10 each
the_crx replied:
Just buy a key blank on eBay and have a place cut it. Cheap and easy.

Hey man! I used to do this for a living! First, get a nonchipped copy made of your key at a hardware store like ACE. Or order one online. Get on CarKeysExpress or CarAndTruckRemotes and find the key you need. MOST LIKELY your car has an immobilizer that you need a chipped key for but I’ve run into Honda’s that didn’t. If you need one, which you probably do, you can find it in the aforementioned sites. Then go to an ACE hardware or a local hardware store that’s not Home Depot or Lowe’s. Typically Honda key cuts are in the $20 range with $20 for programming. They’re going to “clone” your key instead of programming it. But you can program your own key through YouTube videos. The same goes with the fob key as well. That way, you’re able to get a key for about $50 instead of $300. If you don’t want to deal with the hassle, call an automotive (or mobile) locksmith. They’ll probably charge about $150.
I also seriously advise getting a couple non chipped copies of that key made ASAP. You do NOT want to have to replace that ignition cylinder. You may also be able to reset/turn off your immobilizer. If not, you can glue/velcro the head of your currently chipped key under the steering column and then only use non-chipped keys for a MUCH cheaper solution.

I lost a VW electronic key while on holiday. I got lucky when I went to a Locksmith that was not able to programme car keys and asked them where I could get it done. There is a specialist in the area who produced a completely functional replica. He had some very trick looking kit to do it.

Legit look on Facebook marketplace. Plenty of guys in there that do all sorts of keys. Many of them advertise around $40-$60 around chicagoland area.

I bought a blank key on Amazon and had an automotive locksmith cut it. Everything cost me about $75

Is it a key with the chip in it?
Ocseemorahn replied:
I've had luck buying the appropriate key blank from Amazon for about $10-20 and then having Ace Hardware cut it for me. You could buy the blank from Ace but they charge a surprising amount. If it's a more modern car they can also program the car computer to recognize the key for you. As I recall the programming was about $70. While you're doing it, get two keys made. Lot's of cars let you program new keys on your own if you have at least two keys already to put into the ignition. Therefore, it behooves you to always have 3 keys/remotes so you can cheaply reprogram a new one if you lose one. Same with remotes.

ACE hardware EDIt to add: I had a bear of a time getting the keys programmed in. I eventually got one to work, took out the chip and taped it near the ignition; now all the keys work. :)

Local locksmith. Smaller the operation the better your chances on getting a good deal. Meaning don't use a big box store. They might even be able to cut the key for you ahead of time using your VIN number if they have a code cutting machine. Good luck

Order keys from here. https://www.carandtruckremotes.com/ They're inexpensive, then take it to a local locksmith to get it cut and programmed. Last month I ordered a $30 Toyota keyfob and a local locksmith cut it and programmed for $50. Simply call all your local locksmith and find the cheapest price. Also find a locksmith that has a physical location you can stop by rather than mobile locksmiths that come to you because you also pay for traveling fee with them.
Axemaster92 replied:
Honda tech here- unless the car is old (like 99 or older) the key has a chip in it that gets programmed to the ignition. The reason the dealer is so much money is because you’re paying for the programming. The key blank only costs them like $30 bucks, but it’s sold to you for double that, and then you’re paying around $90 to program it. This applies for cars with and without any sort of remote entry. You can try an automotive lock smith, but they honestly won’t be that much cheaper. I have the ability to program Honda keys from my personal scanner, but I doubt you’re located near Philadelphia so that doesn’t help much..

You may not have many options depending on the year and the security features it has. Some keys have a pill in them for anti-theft. I have a friend that constantly broke his accord keys and eventually loses the immobilizer chip. I finally glued it to his column next to the pickup coil and he just uses an unprogrammed solid key now and the lock remote is separate. The downside is that there is no immobilizer/anti starting feature now, but that isn't a concern for him.

Ace hardware can copy most keys, or you might get lucky at Lowe’s

Get on Facebook and find a civic enthusiast group in your area, 90% of the time someone on there either works at Honda or has the key code reader and can do it for you. I paid a guy 50 bucks to make 2 keys up for my element
WeeklyPerformer replied:
you can buy replacement honda key cases with blank blades for pennies on the dollar. See if yours has a chip holder or not, sometimes getting the chip out can be a beeotch if yours has the holder. The keys break all the time right where the little screw is. Bad key design really, but high security honda always has problems with the shit ass split wafers.
stylz168 replied:
Your key may still have a chip, which you need to transfer over to the new fob. I have a 2006 Scion, which has a little chip glued inside the key fob with the buttons to unlock/lock. When that key finally broke, I carefully cut apart the plastic and shoved the guts containing to chip into the new fob I got on Amazon for $20. I went to a local locksmith in Queens to get the key cut, and didn't need to program a blank chip because I transferred the old one.
