Alton Brown's books generally give both weight and volume measurements, as he's a big proponent of measuring by weight. Other than that, I'm a big fan of British cookbooks.

[Bravetart](http://bravetart.com/) has some really nice recipes. It's not metric, it's imperial, but she works with weight instead of volume, and there's some really good conversion tables from imperial to metric online, like [this](http://www.metric-conversions.org/weight/)

I love this tiny Indonesian restaurant called Bunga Mawar on the Zeedijk. It's run by an old Indonesian couple and it has a very simple menu. It's such a lovely quiet little place and the food is delicious.

Il Palio near Leidseplein! Pasta, pizza, and lasagne for 5 euro, and is pretty good for that price.

The fries from Frites uit Zuyd on Ceintuurbaan were awarded "best in galaxy" or something like that by someone, so maybe that's worth a try? Also, Riaz on Bilderdijkstraat for some damn fine Hindustani Surinamese food.

Just visited last week and went to Omelege or something like that. Pretty cheap and good food, brunch place I guess. Also try Piqniq. I went there and it was very tasty. Will definitely go back to these places when I study there next year.
