Colleen, I would stay in the Faubourg Marigny anytime. I know there are a lot of B&Bs but don't know of any to recommend. I would go on the net and look for bed and breakfast/Faubourg Marigny/New Orleans and you should get a listing. Try calling a previous clients, if possible, and get their in-put, or the BBB. Be careful at night and ask the owner about safety (sorry to say, but this is not a safe city). There are plenty of good eateries' in the area and the architecture is great. A couple of centuries ago it was the first neighborhood of the French Quarter. There will surely be festivals of some sort in the quarter or close by. I don't know if this helped. On your way there or back - Steamboat Bill's in Lake Charles has wonderful shrimp or crawfish Pistolettes and great Boudin! Don's in Lafayette Is famous for Crawfish pie, jambalaya, crawfish étouffée... Travel safely!!

The Hotel Richelieu on Chartres St 1 block from Esplinade. Grand old gal, shightly faded but still a cool place to stey. Paul McCartney stayed there in one of it's several heydays.
