NC Zoo I will be visiting the NC Zoo for the first time soon. I've never been to Ashboro either.
Can anyone recommend some good dinner restaurants in the area, as well...

We went last Saturday. My advice is to park near the North America entrance. Once inside, head straight for the Tram and take it to Junction Plaza. From there, you can walk the Africa loop. You'll then be back at Junction Plaza where you can have lunch or just take a break before exploring North America. When you're done, you'll be back at the original entrance. We didn't visit any local establishments, so I can't give any dinner recommendations.

There's a new fried chicken restaurant *in* the zoo which is actually awesome. Probs more of a big lunch than dinner b/c the zoo closes (at 5 I think). Totally forget what it's called and I will not google it. glhf

Get there early. Walk from one end to the other and take the tram back. It's a big zoo. If you're into reptiles they have this awesome desert reptile dome display that's like playing where's Waldo looking for all of the little guys.

If you are planning to hit up some other museums or aquariums over the summer or over the next year check into a member pass it gives discounts at nearly every zoo, conservatory, arboretum, museum and aquarium in NC and even some other states as well. https://ncaquariumsociety.com/family-memberships/

Also bring some quarters or small pair of binoculars, on the Africa side there is a large open area were animals roam. The quarters are for the big metal binocular things they have for people to use. Enjoy cuz it’s a great zoo!

Everything everyone said here and also, I can't stress this enough: Go early. Early on a weekday is even better. You get a way better view, far fewer crowds and better experiences (they'll let you feed the giraffes for ages if no one else is around).

The Table is a wonderful restaurant and bakery in Asheboro. Seems like it belongs in a much bigger city! http://www.thetablefarmbakery.com

Try not to go during peak hours, it's a zoo in multiple senses of the word on weekends. Although it's kind of fun for people watching like the state fair since you really get an honest cross section of NC people there, for better or worse. I usually park by the lower Africa entrance, walk that loop, do North America and then shuttle or walk back down to the car. In general I think the Africa section has better exhibits but there are some things in NA you won't want to miss either. Be prepared to pay predictably exorbitant prices for shitty food. I don't know anything about good eats in the Asheboro area though.
TheCharlieRock replied:
You don’t have to have them but sometimes the animals will be waaaaaay out there so it helps

I'm from Asheboro originally and we always eat at America's Roadhouse when we are in town. Lots of food and some exotic options; ostrich, alligator and buffalo. They have a really good seafood plate or the usual burgers etc.

Correct thoughts, Diane Rick Smith...I saw a mouse come across the floor at Sir Pizza at N Fayetteville once, but they didn't do all that closing and stuff...However, I've never been back there..
Jane R. replied:
It's my understanding that they are streamlining the menu, no breakfast will be served. You will order at the counter, and your food will be brought out to you, like Roadhouse Express. They said they would still serve the tomato soup though.
