The best tattoo shop in New Jersey? Hi there... looking to get my first tattoo pretty soon and I want it to be done by someone who is experienced and can give me the...

"The best tattoo shop" basically you are going to get opinions from everyone. I am sure there are some very good shops up north. I only know central nj shops but something like an animal doesn't seem so complicated. check out some websites and work done by artists at different places. I dont think youd run into an issue doing it that way.

Try going on yelp and finding the highest rated shops, then go to their sites and check out the artists individually. Depending on the kind of animal and detail, there's gonna be a lot of artists **even at reputable shops** that may not be able to give you the look/style you want.

I've gotten most of my tattoos by Buffy at [Hot Rod Tattoo](http://hotrodtattoo.org/home.html) in Atlantic City. The shop is one of the cleanest I've ever been in. Everyone gets ID'd....the whole staff is really cool. Definitely a top-notch shop.

Fat Kat in Keyport, NJ. I've been there once and I'll go there again. The staff were incredibly friendly, and worked well with what I wanted for my design. My artist, I believe his name was Anthony (it was a few years ago), understood that I have a short torso, so my shoulder tattoo couldn't be too big. I incorporated my cat's pawprints, which in my opinion, since they were taken from the actual prints, were flawless.

I've had 2 pretty large pieces done this year by Everett at First Place in Hackettstown NJ. He does amazing work. I would consider him an artist that tattoos rather than a tattoo artist. He has tons of really great drawings on his room's walls that show off his artistic skills as well so when I first sat down with him there was a doubt in my mind that I was going to get a quality tattoo. The 2nd time I went back, it was very shortly after the 1st as I was very happy with it. This tattoo was fairly larger than the 1st and was also a cover up from a tattoo I had done when I turned 18. He freehanded the entire thing and the detail is amazing. I will never have a tattoo done by anyone other than Everett

[1 out of 2: the 2nd piece done by Ev, all free-handed freshly finished the eyes aren't red](http://instagram.com/p/qNlHgnS_nw/?modal=true)

Hope this helps! PM me if you have any questions about the shop up there or if you want a better picture of the back to see the quality post-healing/peeling.
Ooo one last thing! Everett is very good with the pen, I wouldn't consider the tattoo to be painful in anyway as he doesn't dig into you like my first tattoo artist did. I have one place that I'd recommend staying away from that I'd be okay mentioning in a PM but not here as I don't wanna bad-mouth anyone and that sub-par tattoo had been done 5-6 years ago

Ink Spot West is THE best tattoo shop in NJ. Steve Ferguson, the owner and tattoo artist has been in the business for over 30 years. He is a pioneer in the industry and has numerous awards for his gift. His shop is located in Greenbrook, NJ and and sets very high standard in cleanliness and professionalism. Many have tried to "copy" him, look around, there'a a tattoo shop on EVERY corner, everyone wants to be a tattoo artist nowadays.. And he isn't ridiculously expensive because he's humble in his gift and just loves tattooing. He's in a class on his own. There's a tattoo shop opening up everyday and they will probably be gone soon after that, because MOST of these places are in it for a quick profit but they soon find out that he real hardcore tattoo customers will NOT be returning to these places because they are a dime a dozen nowadays. Steve Ferguson from Ink Spot Tattoos has always set the record for one-of-a-kind tattoo art.

Met a nice girl over the weekends that worked in The Tattoo Factory 2 in Wayne, NJ. I also have heard about them by word of mouth. They have a good reputation. Check them out. I know that is the first place I am going to go once I decide what I want to get.
AnalogPen replied:
The Tattoo Factory is a good one up north. I believe there is an artist here at the shore who specializes in animal tattoos, but I am not sure. She was supposed to work at the Art Gallery in Lacey, but she may have left; I have not been there in some time.

Sorry, I know I'm gonna get downvoted for this, but if you really need to ask what the best shop in NJ is, you're not plugged into the culture and probably wouldn't know the difference. The best shop in NJ is Electric in Bradley Beach. I go to Heirloom in Manville. Powerhouse Tattoo in Montclair is nice too.

It all depends on what you're looking to get. I go to Sara at EvolvInk in Morristown. Awesome color work, super creative, and all around rad person. Check them out [here](http://www.evolvinkstudios.com/).

I went into the different shops in my area and looked at their portfolios and also their fb pages. I like Pure Ink in ledgewood. But my next one I'm driving out to Allentown because I found an artist whose style better fit what I wanted this time.
