Planning a trip to LA and New York with a big group. Any recommendations on the best areas to stay in LA and/or New York? Are there any nice hotels you can recommend in...
Grace D. replied:
Ok Adam my friend, I'm going to help you out here. Considering I live on Hollywood Blvd. in the heart of Hollywood I can direct you with genuine information. Santa Monica is nice but once you're there, you're going to stay there (it takes 1-2 hours to get to Hollywood depending on traffic) and there is no nightlife sufficient for a big group (i.e. there are mostly small bars and lounges-no clubs or major events take place there). Downtown is an absolute NO. Period. I've lived there, I go there at least twice a week...no. The Roosevelt is nice (for drinks) but the location is in the cheesiest and most tourist congested part of town. I would not recommend this hotel. Beacher's Madhouse is worth visiting however. Pretty much anything east of La Brea on Hollywood Blvd is a no (that includes the W hotel). The Chateau is one of the best hotels but not suitable for a large group. I would recommend: The London or The Mondrian. West Hollywood, Sunset area is close to numerous shopping destinations, restaurants, bars, and clubs. The best clubs for a large group are: Greystone, Lure, and The Beverly (If XIV Summer sessions are on-it is a MUST!). DO NOT go to Avalon, Supperclub, or Playhouse. By the time you get here there will be new clubs as well, so best to check with someone. There's my 2 cents. Hope it helps!

Santa Monica in LA rocks!! You can check out Hollywood and Beverly hills on the day from there. Great beaches and vibe!
Nicholas M. replied:
The Palace Hotel in NY, great views of the park. The Peninsula Beverly Hills is the business. Can't go wrong with those two.
Tanya C. replied:
Pasadena in Lax safe & great places for Jo to shop- eg Abercrombie, Armani Exchange, Macy's, Etc good rest in area too.If you want to splurge go to The Huntington if not The Westin or The Sheraton. Glendale isn't too far away too for more shopping madness!!

Yo Adam, Re: New York ... Last time I stayed there I decided to stay just out of the City as I a:like a nice view and b:still wanted some quiet time ... This was a good option, it was nice enough, well priced for new york and has good transport options to town from the front door step (ferry, bus, subway etc) ... Worth a check out, my room had a mint view of manhattan skyline and i think i paid about $300NZD per night, from memory ... Check it http://www.sheratonlincolnharbor.com/

Re: LA, on our last trip we made there part of it we stayed on the Queen Mary ship in Long Beach, very novel and cool, lost of history etc and cheap as, not 6 star ... but very cool ... worth a look In Santa Monica we stayed at the Holiday Inn on the Pier, that was ok, good enough, has out door pool, not very flashy tho but mint location. Anaheim: Sheraton Mirage hotel, was good, well priced, decent food and good 24 hour pool complex San Diego: Westin and Sheraton, both very nice hotel there. http://www.queenmary.com/

If you're wanting to get on the lash, somewhere near W.Hollywood would be good, although you can cab there no sweat as the 415 runs right through there. DON'T stay in Hollywood or Downtown. Both are shit-holes. While you're there, try and get along to Avalon Club (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avalon_Hollywood) this place has been going since 1927 and has been a club since the early 2000's (with live music before that). One of the best nights out I have ever had!

Don't get a hotel near Sylvia Park. Try downtown cbd and catch the train out there. I work 2 minutes from Sylvia Park, the closest hotels are in Otahuhu, and you really don't want to stay there
Helixdaunting replied:
Sylvia Park is surrounded by an industrial zone and the motorway, but there's a train to Silvia park from the city centre. The city centre has all the best (most expensive and cheapest) hotels and all the best pubs, and a transport hub with busses, trains and ferries all leaving from Britomart Transport Centre. Auckland Transport runs them all so an AT HOP card will get you on all public transport and simplified billing "zones" means it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to get around. I know you want "a true Kiwi experience" but I recommend you do at least some of the touristy stuff as no one on Facebook will like and photos of you sitting in traffic and worrying about house prices. If you only have two days in Auckland you can either head north where they have some nice beaches or go to Waiheke Island (there are ferries every 30 minutes from the wharf downtown, look for a big brown old-timey building with a clock on it) where they have even nicer beaches, vineyards, cafes, etc as well as ziplining and scenic walks and thousands of tourists visiting every day (for good reason!). If you have time I recommend heading up the Sky Tower in central auckland. Lovely views from up there.

Agree. Don't stay in Silvia park. Go to the heritage in Auckland to stay. Heritage building with roof top pool and views over harbour. Pick the right room and get breakfast included. Wotif.com
