Regardless, pay the $100 or so to have a pre purchase inspection done by a third party mechanic. I don't care what lot it's from or what car it is. Just always do this.

I would look outside of Austin also. Due to influx of people the car business is booming. I bought my car in Dallas along with 2 other of my coworkers. We all saved an average of 2500 dollars, no joke.

Anti-recommendation: Oak Hill Auto. Do NOT buy from them.
ETA reason why not, now that I have a minute: I bought a car from him a few years ago. I checked the car out as far as I could, asked loads of questions, and was shown a history. But it was all falsified. The truth was that the car had been through one of the hurricanes and sold as an insurance loss at auction with some significant rebuilding, most notably in the chassis, where they even put a mismatched, wrong-sized brake plate on the back axle (we found this because it kept causing brake, tire, and expensive CV joint problems).
I bought the car when it was cool out. When it got warm, it regularly smelled of a hellish combination of mildew and ocean. Because the engine had been soaked but hadn't had everything replaced, things were constantly going awry, meaning it was spending loads of time broken down and taking a lot of money to keep going for even a month or two at a time. I paid cash for it. All of this was figured out over the course of a year and I was embroiled in some wacky personal life hijinks, so I didn't take action on the way I should have. Ultimately, I had a crap car that I had to allow to die a painful death then sell to someone who just wanted the body.
All of this after telling the guy it was really important for me to have a reliable car that could get me to and from Houston to see my aging, unwell dad, along with other family members, and to help me support my mom up here by doing errands and such. I ended up being a drag on her instead of a help for a while. So, yeah, like the used car salesman stereotype, the dude's a complete scammer and not the ethical small family business owner he makes himself out to be. I don't want to see anyone else go through what I went through in buying a car from them - I can't even imagine what horrors await a credit customer!
Good luck in your search!

Not sure what your situation is but consider getting a bike rather than a car - it will save you a lot of money and cause you to be in the best shape of your life. Car2Go, and Cap Metro bus system are both transportation options as well if you live in Central Austin
