Hi
I wrote on here a few weeks ago about the place we've just started renting and its solar panels. Thanks for the advice.
A few weeks later and I've signed up with...

Some quick observations from a non-expert who is used to drafty Australian housing. Powershop have a good reputation - indeed leading - their pricing is probably ok but you can check around. Australian housing is one level up from 'shack' standards and leak like sieves (correction - they are sieves!) - in Sydney its worse because Sydney-siders (unlike Melburnians) dont truly believe it gets cold so the houses have even worse draft problems compounded by even worse, poor or non-existent heating. From my experience of drafty inner urban Melbourne and and Sydney housing you should clear up all leaks as discussed above and at the same time get radiant heaters that heat the walls and floors and remove/turn off the convection heaters immediately (I have experienced $2000 bill shock before learning this valuable lesson). Let Sydney night time temperatures drop to 5 degrees (everyone will sleep better) - 15 degrees is probably understandable in the UK given colder outside temperatures but you can get away with 5 in Sydney for sure. Useful trick is to put paper over the air vents in the walls if any and clog gaps with any paper or other material that works (good for rentals). A reasonable bill should be in the $300 to $400 per quarter range depending. Hope this helps - apologies to Australian builders - its not your fault - just a cultural issue which has only recently discovered tat leaks matter!!
To track down where the power is going, there are a number of devices that can read your electricity meter such as https://www.wattcost.com/solar , which might be worth looking at. Even with a smart meter such as most of us in VIC have, you don't get instant feedback - the meter is only uploaded to the web portal a few times a day although you get hourly data. For smart meter owners, you can get "in-home displays" (IHDs) that connect wirelessly to your smart meter to give instant readings although I am not sure that an IHD is better than the above device.

I'm an aussie, headed the other way to UK. I wouldn't dream of sleeping at 21 over here. We set ours to 16. There's a fair bit of literature documenting the optimum sleep temperature between 16-18.5 http://alifeofproductivity.com/exact-temperature-sleep-good-nights-sleep/ https://sleep.org/articles/temperature-for-sleep/
