Dave C. replied:
https://www.facebook.com/10314608766Durham University Brass Band has its own band who rehearse on a Tuesday evening the The Music School. Really sociable group who have some EXCITING things planned just in November this year. Otherwise there are lots of local bands. Lewis Wilkinson is MD at Lanchester, and Brian Yates is a great contact who works with Spennymoor, lots of opportunities to get out and play in Durham. Congratulation on results and enjoy your time at the University!
Steven A. replied:
As you can see, North of England is suffering from a massive lack of cornet players at the moment. Expect a lot of bribery/free drinks after your first rehearsal no matter where you go. My suggestion is to try them all out and decide who you like the best. If you want to give https://www.facebook.com/207187309316819 Dunston Silver Band a try then I'm sure we can sort a lift out for you from Durham. It's only 20 minutes away so just chuck me a message. Jimmy W. replied:
Depends what you're after. Durham Constabulary Band is the nearest and best for a student budget. They practice not far from the University at Police HQ and have free travel to gigs (at some great places). They don't do contests though. Spennymoor Town Band isn't too far either and you have to think about where they do jobs (they tend to stick to County Durham so not too much travelling). NASUWT are good and not far from Durham either. There are plenty of other good bands in the North East like Dunston, Westoe, Easington & the like but if you can't get a lift it's a pain in the arse on public transport, not to mention a drain on the wallet. All the bands I've mentioned are nice people but if I was in your shoes I'd go for Durham Constabulary. Right on the doorstep. Spennymoor & NASUWT come a close second.

Robyn, Ocean Brass have 2 gigs in Sparsholt college May and July, another in Bishops Waltham september and a fantastic Real ale pub just down the road from the band room. We are family orientated as quite a few of us have young families. the band members are fairly young and we enjoy playing and making music. Even with Edward March conducting us ;-). we rehears once a week on a thursday evening and a few extras leading up to a concert/contest. Warm and friendly band would welcome you into our ranks.
Harriet O. replied:
"Not very good" is irrelevant... kind of. I hadn't played in 10 years before I joined OB in October, and I can now happily say I can play A London Overture (which, despite apparently being a grade 5 piece... I disagree with! I think it's 6-7 at least...). You'll be pushed hard at Otterbourne Brass - don't doubt that for a second! - but it's a great atmosphere and rehearsals are what wrong notes (beats, etc) are for:)

Occasionally, I like to record the band I conduct in order to better appraise their progress, but the mini-disc player I use...
Matt W. replied:
We use a Zoom Q3 HD (replaced by the Zoom Q4 I believe) it has a basic camera on it but is primarily an audio recorder, for £179 it was great value, we've done tons of recordings with it. You can set low/high/auto gain and we always set it low so it's consistent. : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InKBduEnhCE

Here's the same camera on Auto for the gain and in low-light conditions. The Q4 / Q5 is better I believe in lower light conditions. Not quite brass band but hope it helps : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUQP0 djjytk

There's loads on the market now and most do a good job. I seeked advice from Keith Johnson a few years back and was recommended the Olympus LS-10, which has never let me down. It can now be bought really cheaply, as with the LS-11 which has a better low frequency capture. One thing to consider is battery use. The Sony PCM M10 has had great reviews, fantastic battery life and simple to operate.
Tom D. replied:
Oh .. considering your use for band appraisal, something like the Sony M10 may have a benefit you might appeal to .. the ability to slow down recordings to nit-pick ;-) http://www.sony.co.uk/pro/product/broadcast-products-professional-audio-portable/pcm-m10/overview/#overview
