I've used Vernon Tuck (512)332-1898. Very happy with his work (redoing a bathroom after the 40 yr old tiling and wall had a run in with a teen boy & replacing a septic system). He also did work for mom in south Austin & took extra care of them without taking advantage. He even added a handrail for my mom at her back step because she mentioned she didn't feel safe stepping down the steps any longer. Check out his FB page: Vernon Tuck Construction
I need a handyman with electrical knowledge that can replace a regular wall switch with a remote control one.. I don't need an electrician for that .. I don't think.....

My original post: I am a State of Texas licensed Journeyman Electrician. it takes a Master Electrician to legally contract any electrical work. you may do your own electrical work on your own property. To clarify who can and cannot legally do electrical work: A Master Electrician or Journeyman Electrician who works for the Master. They must be licensed by the State. Even out on the farm or out of the city limits. They carry their license with them when performing electrical work and present it to you if you ask. This is for the protection of the homeowner. Handymen may not solicit, accept, advertise or perform electrical work. You are going to pay on that house for 30 years and in excess of $250,000. Don't burn it down trying to save a few dollars.
Jim O. replied:
It's governed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). It publishes several standards for fire protection. The applicable one here is the National Electrical Code which is updated every other year typically. This is to update safe practices for installation. Licensees are required to take update classes every year in order to renew their licenses. This makes sure that there is a qualified pool of electricians that know more than you and will keep you and your family safe. In some instances electrical fires have been traced to unqualified installers (unlicensed) and resulted in reduction in insurance compensation. If you are not sure about how to do it, hire a pro. My neighbor has pliers and the time and inclination, but, I'll let a dentist pull my tooth.
Anyone have a suggestion for a handyman? Mainly little jobs electrical or plumbing or too old to fix it.
