I am looking for recommendations on cargo bikes. I'd like to be able to ride to the store with my 3 year old. Any info would be GREATLY appreciated

I own the Sun Atlas, the cheaper version of the Big Dummy. I got it at MidCity Bikes for around $650. It's got the big rack and from xtracycle.com I ordered a hoodie for $75 which fits snugly over the rack and allows me to carry 4+ bags of groceries, and handle bars that attach to the seat post a la tandem bike. It's great, I love it. When my wife is feeling lazy or a friend is in from out of town they can sit on the back and be ferried anywhere I want to go. I have no need to drive to the grocer any more. 10/10 would recommend. http://www.sunbicycles.com/product_detail.php?short_code=Atlas+Cargo

Most shops in town can order you a Big Dummy; Pedal Play carries the Kona version, the Ute; you may be able to convince a local shop to order a Yuba Mundo as well. As far as test riding any of them you're very unlikely to find one unless you connect the man who rides the Yuba. As unique a ride feel as these are, don't expect them to handle like an ordinary bike. Just take the plunge and order one that fits your needs and budget.

I know I've seen a man on a Big Dummy and there is a family that has a Dutch Bike with the big "bucket" in the back. I haven't seen any Yuba Mundos in BRLA. I wonder how we can get their attention?
Mark M. replied:
I don't remember the wife's name but Jessie Allison, music prof at LSU, is the husband. Blythe, you may also want to talk to Steve Poss as well. He lives in the Garden District. If you come on our Velo du Monde ride, Saturday, April 20, you can meet him at the Sustainable Homes tour.

There are quite a few varieties, Blythe. Here are links to a few: http://surlybikes.com/bikes/big_dummyhttp://yubabikes.com/ http://www.dutchbikeseattle.com/ http://www.xtracycle.com/ That should get you started. If you continue along this path please keep us up to date on your progress.

It’s been some years since I’ve needed to visit, but Mid City Bikes on Government St were great.

I happen to like Tom at The Bicycle Shop on Highland or Gus at Capital Cycle on Jones Creek. The Essen Ln CC is full of bike snobs and I have not been to the Florida Blvd one. Edit - sorry you didn't like Tom's shop. I got my TT bike from them and haven't had issues. Maybe try the CC on Jones Creek?
