Dentists Who Accept SHIP: Recommendations? Hey, y'all, it's time for me to face the music and get a dental check-up.
What are your recommendations for dentists that...
Quarzac replied:
I went to Campus Dental Care on University and Shattuckish. Was a fine dentist as far as I could tell, and was super easy to do, just gave them my student ID number.

[Dr. Cavalli, for sure.](http://www.yelp.com/biz/bill-t-cavalli-dds-berkeley)
Ashofsky replied:
Elmwood dental is awesome. Small office and they actually care about their patients. Dr. Bavafa isn't looking to get more money from unnecessary extra procedures and is really friendly. They take ship. http://www.yelp.com/biz/elmwood-dental-care-berkeley
crumblekins replied:
Barry G. Kami was my go-to when I was on SHIP. You'll have a pay a little bit ($15 ish I think) for the full exam (xrays, etc), but they're so fucking professional and gentle that I found it totally worth it. I hadn't been to the dentist in about 4 years when I went to him and it was a relatively pleasant experience. Been going ever since (3 years).
azzeccagarbugli replied:
Thanks for the suggestions. This has been helpeful.
I have a huge painful abscess in one of my upper back teeth (#5 for those who know tooth numbers). Does anyone have any suggestions for a home remedy cure? My dentist...
Jane S. replied:
Sorry to hear that. And even sorrier that dentists charge so much to fix our teeth these days that it is impossible if you don't have insurance. PS: Here's an article I wrote on dental tourism a few years ago. Meet you in Puerto Vallarta, okay? http://jpstillwater.blogspot.com/2010/09/dental-tourism-price-of-saving-tooth.html
awww. I know what u mean. replacing it will be expensive. it cn be done though. there's something called Care Credit. it's a GEMB credit card. they'll hold the interest for 12 months so if u pay it off in a yr, no interest chrge. tell 'em u want a crown, not a bridge.
Karla F. replied:
Maggie Richards is right. Peroxide will get under the tooth and start pushing it out. If it does work, put a few drops of clove oil or crush a few cloves in a small piece of cotton and place it directly on the tooth. Leave it there for several hours. It's almost instantly soothing and a lot of the infection will draw into the cotton. Dentists don't recommend it because the cloves have a tendency to break up the infected tooth, but if you're going to have it pulled anyway, what the heck?
Nancylee Z. replied:
Dental health is essential to your overall health. Did you know, among other things, it can contribute to colon cancer? A competent dentist would require that you take antibiotics to get rid of the infection first and then might do a root canal (expensive) or pull the tooth. Don't the free clinics have dentists there? Both of Cedar Rapids free clinics have dental care.
Brenda H. replied:
throwing antibiotics at things that haven't bn proven to be infected is a BAAAD practice. all this hippie a** $#%& about garlic and honey and lala and deedee is a waste of time, space and energy. have it pulled. go see Lawrence Wu on Franklin st. in oakland. he's gentle and pretty sure he takes medi-cal
Just chipped a tooth.
Do you know of a good inexpensive dentist in the SF Bay Area? I know there's a dentist school but I don't have any additional info.
Charlie H. replied:
Yeah, you can get fairly cheap dental work from UCSF. It takes a long time generally though. All decisions require faculty review and approval. They have more modern equipment than my normal dentist, but not as modern as my oral surgeon. http://dentistry.ucsf.edu/patient-services Directory of Clinics | UCSF Dental Center | UCSF Dentistry dentistry.ucsf.edu Welcome to the UCSF Dental Center. We offer services to meet all of your dental... needs. You may choose to obtain services from dental student providers, dentists pursuing specialty training (residents), or faculty dentists.See More
Love J. replied:
Life Long Medical on Alcatraz has decent rates.
Tug S. replied:
Cal, UCSF and I think SFGH all have dental clinics. I think the CAL clinic does some minor cosmetic stuff, like capping.
