I used MarGo Plumbing in Cedar Grove. They do have a $100 (I believe) diagnostic free, but it is waived if they do work on your system. I had no heat right before the blizzard and had made an appointment with another company who cancelled 30 minutes before their appointment window. I called MarGo, and they had somebody out there within an hour of my call (and they did not charge me extra for the emergency appointment). I highly recommend them. www.margoplumbing.com

I suggest you speak to several established plumbers that have experience working with steam heat systems. You will probably need to install a second boiler so that the systems can be split between the two living units and controlled by separate thermostats. Steam heat, although an old technology, can be very effective and efficient when installed and maintained properly. The steam pipes and the baseboard heaters must be pitched correctly so that the radiators heat up quickly and so that the boiler doesn't run too often. The radiators need to be be properly vented, and their valves in good working order, also so that they heat up quickly and so that steam is properly distributed thru the system. All reasons to go with a pluming pro who knows how to work with these systems. I've used Windheim Plumbing in Nutley for the past 10 years. There are also a number of other plumbing companies in the area that have been around for a long time that might be qualified to do this kind of work. Type "plumber" into the "search this group" box at the top of this page to pull up other recent posts in which people have asked for and received recommendations for plumbers from other members.
