I'm looking for good restaurants (that can handle ~10 people) outside Bloomington for next weekend. Preferably on the North side. Suggestions?
Adam K. replied:
Ellettsville has a Wee Willie's, which is a fairly decent greasy spoon diner. Bynum Steak House in Martinsville is pretty top notch. And Whiskey River off of 37 & 144 near Bargersville is basically the best BBQ I've had in the midwest, the ribs tied with what I had in Montgomery, close second to the ribs I had in KC. The ribs are slow smoked, good bark, just the right amount of tender vs. chew balance, and the sauces are a very well-made standard sweet BBQ, and a signature 'whiskey glaze' which is, judging by taste, a reduction of whiskey and butter. I'd also recommend the west side of town, since it's more a place for residents rather than students. The original Casa Brav is over there, along with a My Thai, and stuff like Olive Garden/O'Charley's. Also, there's a hotdog restaurant called the Naughty Dog where they serve every variation of hot dog. Not fancy, but it helps when you're feeling nostalgic for New York or Chicago.

It's not to the North, but the restaurant at the Scenic View Lodge is possibly far enough from downtown to be relatively peaceful even this weekend. If the weather is good, the terrace is lovely, and offers a view of Lake Monroe. The food is decent, and there are lots of beers, including many local ones, on tap. http://www.scenicviewlodge.com/restaurant.php

Does anyone know who lived in this house? The address of the Trio Cafe was 9645 Lyndale and this is just south of that. Photo dated 1956
Brian C. replied:
Great pic, Pat! Don't know about the house, but that is Oxboro Theatre on the far right.
Pat D. replied:
Ground was broken for the Trio Cafe at 9647 Lyndale on Feb 1948. The home was 9701 and owned by Otto Kobs and then E. Pepperling in the 50 s and 60 s. Across the street was 9704 Lyndale, Al-Fays Cafe, Starrs Hamburger Shop in 40 s, Starr's Cafe in early 50 s and then Merrick's Motel in 50 s. Anyone remember those or have pictures?
Pat D. replied:
The Oxboro Ice and Fuel shop at 9641 Lyndale was owned by C.B. MacMahon. In Mar 1939 it was robbed of $80 and the thief put employee Earl Hill in the ice room. The temperature was kept at 23 degrees and he was in it from 9:45-11:00 when the owner returned.

Buster and Dee Krause ( good friends of my parents) who owned the Trio Cafe are still alive and go to my church. I will try to see if they know. and I will check with my mom who is still alive and very sharp, she grew up in Bloomington and the farm she was raised on was from 90 th to 86 th street and Lyndale to Nicolett and she may know. I will check with her.

Across the street from the Trio Cafe was Jackson's Store, Bunny's Cafe and an ice house. I THINK I remember a family last name Johnson (go figure, in the land of 10,000 Johnsons) living in that house. I lived at 9215 Lyndale 1960 - 63, then moved to a house on Dupont Ave.
