Can anyone recommend a good holistic dentist for a child? We are new to the area and have not seen a dentist here yet. But a tiny piece of the little guy's molar that is...

I took my son to Dr. Nina Foley in Franklin. She's the only "holistic" dentist in the area that I'm aware of. Frankly, I was disappointed as she immediately wanted to do 4 root canals on my son with no discussion whatsoever of other options. We're doing the best we can with self-treatment at home. However, for the problem you describe, she'd probably be your best bet. Her staff were very friendly. Hope this helps!
Leslie M. replied:
thanks, Martha . We had a dentist back in VA that seemed to be constitutionally incapable of discussing other options, then we found a great dentist that follows WAPF principles ... then we moved. She recommend Mark C. Lambrick DDS - but none of his nu mbers I found on line work. Can you say what makes Dr. Foley "holistic"? The only thing I could glean from her website to support the "holistic" was 'metal free and mercury free procedures.'

More....I've learned since that palate expanders may not be the best long-term solution for widening palates, however. Instead, Ramiel Nagel of www.CureToothDecay.com recommends "splints" and "lightwire functional devices". Much research has taught m e that this is not a common practice down here in the southeast. However, there is a dentist in Mt. Pleasant, TN named Michael Tyler who does use a form of these splints. They are half the cost of orthodontics and do not go permanently on the teeth like braces but are more like a traditional retainer in their in and out abilities. He says when the palate is widened in this way, it moves the entire bones of the face rather than just pushing on the palate, so the expansion (and teeth moved) will stay better. A friend of ours (now 17) is having this splinting done on her teeth and palate now, b/c the palate expander and orthodontics she had done at a younger age did not "stick".

It might be worth your drive to just north of Huntsville, AL (Meridianville) to see Dr. Ada Frazier. (See www.dr-frazier.com ) She was trained under Hal Huggins, the main anti-mercury fillings guy. She refuses to do root canals b/c she understands th e dangers Dr. Price put forth as the focal infection theory. A few years ago she removed a metal filling for me and used ALL the protocol (rubber dam, goggles, oxygen, special hose taking the fumes out of the room, etc.). She also pulled one of my molars all the endodontists had insisted would be no big deal to do a root canal on. It was almost black. Why would I have wanted to save that? Also, she understands the importance of also removing the top 1/16" of the periodontal ligament after pulling a tooth, b/c that part can also retain bacteria and cause long-term health probs just as can a root canal. She helps people choose biocompatible materials for their fillings, too. In a couple of weeks she is going to pull a molar for my young teen (such a sad, sad story). The regular dentist backed me against a wall (literally!) wanting us to get that tooth a root canal. (This daughter has a compromised gut and is not absorbing all the tooth-healthy foods I'm pouring into her--those foods recommended in Ramiel Nagel's book Cure Tooth Decay.) The regular dentist told our 19 yo daughter she had cavities in all four wisdom teeth (which this dentist also pushed us to have removed). Dr. Frazier evaluated and said 1) if the wisdom teeth are not causing problems, there is no need to remove them prophylactically or routinely and 2) she saw that at least three of those cavities were not very sticky (maybe b/c I'd also been pouring cod liver oil and raw liver and butter oil into this girl, too???) 3) the fourth cavity, a little worse than the others, she suggested we wait at least six more months for a recheck before jumping at it with a drill, b/c she knew how hard we are working on a tooth healing diet. Dr. Frazier is about 55. She said she has learned not to be drill-happy, especially for people who are working on their diets. A couple of negatives: I noticed she had a flyer in her info sitting around the office about sealants. Sealants are also unhealthy, putting either plastic or continuous flow flouride (the glass ionomer kind) into the body. I'm sure she wouldn't force them on anyone, though. I also heard from a friend of a friend that they didn't think she did a good job. I guess no one can please everyone.
Nancy W. replied:
There is a WAPF-friendly dentist in Knoxville, Dr. Gary McCown. I called him for advice about our daughter who must get the tooth removed. He agreed that was our only option at this point, b/c he's not a root canal-doer either. I hear there is an al ternative dentist in Chattanooga, too, but I know absolutely nothing about him. He has an ad in one of those freebie papers they give out at Whole Foods. After many bad experiences, I think a holistic dentist is worth the drive. (BTW, I found Dr. Frazier by looking up holistic dental associations. There is a list of those in Nagel's book Cure Tooth Decay and maybe on his website with the same name.)

I'm a dental hygienist and like you all, always looking for a natural way to do things. That is way I live in a farm raise lambs, chickens, a vegetable garden and fruit trees. I would recomend to find a good conservative local dentist that respects you r views and beliefs. By the way I work for one and his name is Dr. Paul Gilliam, he's in Cool Spring area and his # is 615-370-8945. He's not going to try to sell you things you don't need.
