Has anyone shipped RORO from South America to either South Africa or Australia? If so please could you share details. We are hoping to ship out of either Buenos Aires...
Graeme B. replied:
Robin Cooper at JR Williams in Montevideo too very good care of us. robin.cooper@jrwilliams.com.uy . In South Africa contact Rex Freight. They are a small home based business who did all the work for the agent who scalped us with his fee. Here is part of an email I sent to another overlander: The good news for you is that there is a RoRo service from SAmerica to S Africa. The agent in Montevideo is: Robin Cooper robin.cooper@jrwilliams.com.uy And the agent in South Africa is: Rex Freight tel. +27(0) 41 371 1125 mikerex@tiscali.co.za 13 Amatola street Sherwood Port Elizabeth Mary is the contact and her son Warwick will walk you through the customs procedure on the SA side. Rex were the agents our agents paid to do the work and if we had known of them we could have cut out the middle man and saved a stack. Their fee should not be more than $1000.

You can definitely do the Colombia part on your own as mentioned above, I'm still on the fence about the process in Panama. Having used Tea's services, I was pretty pissed when they left us hanging at the port with no ride and no possible way of getting across the dodgy part of Colon to the bus terminal. After we gave Luis the money, he split on his motorcycle and left us hanging. The security guards at the port wouldn't let us leave because they said it was too dangerous. I called Amy and Boris (one of Tea's people) several times and they were of no help. To be fair the entire port was a mess because Colon was flooding and Amy did make some sense out of the chaos. Could we have done it on our own? Maybe, but it's impossible to know since they held our hands MOST of the way in Panama. In Colombia we did it all ourselves and it was no problems. The people at the port are very helpful and many of them speak english.

Try with www.progressive.com. They provide insurances for "normal" cars. You will need an address in the US to log in. If you do not have a friend or family in the US : some people just take an address from the phone book ... I do not know how this works in case of an accident though.
Michael L. replied:
Ok despite what US / Canadian citizens may post, as a European citizen with a European vehicle it is currently an impossibility to insure a Vehicle that is over 19 years of age. Progressive won't be able to help you unfortunately. This thread makes for interesting reading, take a look at my post there https://www.facebook.com/groups/panamtravelers/permalink/1398961126809382/ We just got back from 7 months on the road and were in the same situation as you. Thanks Erica Victorson for posting the wonderful guide. We are in contact with Tea now, evaluating her options. We also have another shipping agent friend's recommendation. If anyone is interested, please comment. Dan Grec we and Overland Sphere have talked to the ferry today. The impression we have is that although they don't want to kill any hopes, it's very likely that the service won't resume until January 2015. Keep in mind that there are many holidays in Panama until than. If their issue involves any governmental clearance, the process will be slowed down. Yes, the ferry may resume but we can also end up waiting a month constantly and repeatedly delaying hopes. Personally, we have to have a deadline and that's this Tuesday (Monday is a holiday.) If we don't hear a date from FerryXpress on Tuesday morning, we will proceed with shipping reservations.
