Btw try roby@speiserseguros.com.ar when we considered getting insurance he was fast and courteous and works with Allianz. I think James used him.

Last season we bought insurance for our trip into Central America which also covered South America. All countries except for the few, like Belize, where you can only purchase at the border. I did this all online from Canada with a company that is in Brownsville, Texas.

4 moths Mercosur via Alberto Fiorito in Jujuy. This guy lived in Australia for a while and replies almost faster on your email than you can send one:-) I paid USD116,- for 4 months for my Land Cruiser. Can be arranged via e-mail.

Email from Alberto is: afa.seguros@gmail.com or fioritojujuy@gmail.com

We bought a 6 month Mercosur policy (our choice) from San Cristobal seguros, for about US$100. We visited their office in Mercedes, Arg. It was fast and efficient. Here are their offices - http://www.sancristobal.com.ar/Pages/Sucursales.aspx#

Hi, we've just sorted ours out. We bought it directly from San Cristobal Seguros, at an office in Argentina. We bought the legal minimum 'green card' coverage - really good price of 1,190 AR pesos for 6 months, covering all the Mercosur countries. We have a campervan. After one of those frustrating searches for someone to cover us, these people were super helpful, quick and professional. www.sancristobal.com.ar

You can visit Seguro Illimani (Calle Loayza # 233 Edificio Mariscal de Ayacucho piso 10 Zona Central). There is where I bought my SOAT.

Alex Smith will be along shortly with all the advice for buying and selling. As for borders, you will need copies of the vehicle and your paperwork. Title (which we don't have in Australia) and registration of the vehicle, your passports and drivers licence. Get an international driving permit as a back up. You will always be asked to make more copies of the page in your passport you just had stamped and then the receipt for the payment you just made to the person asking for a copy!
Alex S. replied:
Buy in Alaska if you want, easy and no sales tax. Don't buy a Canadian vehicle, impossible to fully transfer title when it comes time to sell. Registering as a foreigner is no problem, but as suggested, don't register both vehicles under the same name. Vehicle insurance is not optional in the US and Canada. Your best bet for insuring an international drivers license is Progressive Insurance company. Google them, quotes available online. Won't cover you outside of North America. Any vehicle you buy in North America should be a LHD vehicle. No problem driving all the way to the bottom. Carry vehicle registration with you at all times. Make several copies. Message me for even greater details. I have nearly all the answers you could hope to learn.

We started with a plan of 10 months Alaska to Ushuaia, gave up in Mexico now at 22 months travel over past 4 years. We did get through Central America with rhd (2014) definitely go for left hand drive. Good luck and enjoy. Consider leaving your vehicle if you need to return home, Uruguay you can leave for 12 months, we have done this for last ; years.

If you are eligible for USAA they will cover you in almost every country. I know Somalia and North Korea are among the exceptions. You still need Mexican liability insurance to satisfy their bureaucracy, but that is cheap.
