We need a few volunteers to help build a list of glider friendly veterinarians by state. We have a GA list in the "FILE" section that is already growing. Is there anyone...

You don't need a prescription to buy from pet shed dot com. http://www.petshed.com/revolution.asp

Sophie B. replied:
Try My Pet Warehouse or Pets Direct as I use them and are cheaper than others. I just checked 1800PetMeds and they are more expensive.
Heather C. replied:
I get Revolution from petsmegastore.com out of Australia. No script needed, but you will have to wait a week for shipment. I had a pet rat rescued from the wild who suffered lice and had bad hair loss. I was out of Revolution at the time, so while I waited for it to ship, I slathered him in liquid coconut oil. I let it sit for about a half hour, then bathed him with Dawn. It really helped a ton!
Taking my rats to the vet tomorrow. Vet said "I can only give seven days of antibiotics per visit". This is the second time I'll be going to him.
Robin W. replied:
Brianah I hate to ask, but who is your vet? I am in MA, and I volunteer for Mainely rat rescue, so I have literally met with over 30 different vets in MA an NH...and have never heard of a vet only give a weeks worth of meds like that. In fact some vets, give me the paper script and I fill it at a local CVS. One of my favorite vets is The Odd Pet Vet in South Weymouth. I have also used several different VCAs in the area as well Dr Holmes in Walpole. Here are a couple of Links....

For some reason I thought I was on a different medical post. Yes you can buy revolution without a vet. Revolution is the safest :) 1800 petmeds.com

This has information about Revolution (selamectin) http://ratguide.com/meds/anti-infectives/selamectin_revolution.php The manufacturer has a customer service line that I called with general questions about Revolution like whether or not I had to wash bedding. 1-888-963-8471
Astrid J. replied:
Kitten Revolution (called Stronghold here in Europe) is the only thing I use. It has shown to be safe for rats even when overdosed with 10 times the recommended dose. And it is really effective ^_^ here you need a prescription from a vet, and it can be smart anyways to get help to calculate the proper dose for each rat:)
Natasha M. replied:
Whether you see bugs on a rat or mouse, or you just witness scabs or itching, that pet and all other rats and mice in the room must be treated and their cages well cleaned. If you have other rats or mice and do not think they have parasites, they do; they just have few enough to not yet be observable, but will get worse over time and absolutely reinfect the observable one. Because mites are almost invisible to the human eye, and because mice and rats always have a few mites but under control, never doubt that your pet could have mites. Ectoparasites (parasites on the skin) must always be treated. The by far safest, most reliable, simplest, easiest, and least stressful method to treat these parasites is selamectin, sold as Revolution in the US and Stronghold in the UK. It involves one or two drops on, not in, the pet; non stressful cage cleaning, and no repetition or worries for at least a month and likely far longer. Directions and much more information are in the following document from the files section (Our many very helpful and interesting documents and collections can be found thus: click on 'files' under the banner; or click ON the banner; choose 'files'; or click on three dots; group info; files.): Treating Ectoparasites (Mites, Fleas, etc): The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: https://www.facebook.com/notes/351955091585361/Treating%20Ectoparasites%20(Mites,%20Fleas,%20etc):%20The%20Good,%20the%20Bad,%20and%20the%20Ugly./724243581023175/ The next safest solution, ivermectin, has the disadvantage that it is 40x more dangerous than selamectin; the advantages are availability and price, but the disadvantages can be deadly. In the UK it is widely available labeled Beaphur; in the US you can buy a liquid version for cows for external use or a paste version for horses which they must ingest. Instructions are in the above listed document, as well as scientific research of comparison of the two methods. People will offer dozens of home remedies for ectoparasites. All we have encountered are dangerous in one way or another. I would ask that anyone who is still tempted to offer a home remedy first read the document linked above and see if it is listed as dangerous. If it isn’t, let me know and I will research it.

Looks like a corneal ulceration. He will need at the minimum a topical antibiotic eyedrops, and perhaps something to promote tear production and pain medication. If it's reoccurring or damages the orb itself, the eye most likely needs to be removed. . Do not be fooled - rats are prey animals - it's his job to act like he is not in pain. Have you ever had a spec of dust in your eye? Sucks, yeah? Well, you get the idea that things in your eye are not fun, and over time just hurt more as they irritate the surrounding tissues - but imagine it to the point where the entire surface of your eye is infected. We are humans and can cry and moan about pain - rats do not.:( For now all you can do is rinse it 3-5 times a day with saline eye drops (rewetting drops) to keep it clean. You should also put Blink Gel Tears in his eye multiple times a day. As the orb swells, the blink reflex slows, and the eye dries out. This just makes things worse long term, and the gel drops will help keep it moisturized. He definitely needs to see a vet. Honestly, if this has happened more then 2 times, I would just get it taken out. Eye infections are terribly painful, and can travel into the sinuses, jaw, or even brain. If he's got chronic issues, it's better just to take away the potential for reinfection. Good luck. ~RAA Mod & Medical Help

Oh my goodness, he certainly does need pain meds. The best way to keep rats from chewing at stitches is to keep pain under control. I have never used a coller post op...and have never had one chew stitches. Perhaps Amanda Lynn can tag a medical person here to give advice here. But Id certainly call back the vet asap to get somthing.
