If you are going camping in Banff then the sites that allow fires require a fire permit. With the permit they supply wood. (http://www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/visit/visit9.aspx)

I think Home Depot offers up free wood from the back of their stores. The one in Coventry Hills does, at least... There is also a place on the south side of 41 Ave NE between Centre Street and Edmonton Trail that has firewood for $10.

I am not sure where, but you can get a permit to chop a tree down. Get some friends and liquor, along with a pickup truck and go chop down a tree. It's great fun.

My dad usually just goes to job sites (housing) and grabs wood from the bins. This year he picked up enough wood for the entire summer.

http://www.maximumtreecare.com/firewood.html Check out places like this... tree removal services which put you on a waiting list for when they cut them down. They start at the top of the list and call down until someone says they'll pick it up. Im sure theyre not the only Arborist's doing it, so google it up and see what other companys you can find. good luck
