If you and your partner work average jobs for T-4's, own a home, doing the typical Canadian dream thing, etc, you don't need to pay anyone for financial advice. Read this, invest using one of their model portfolios http://canadiancouchpotato.com/ Any questions you have beyond that can be answered here: https://www.reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceCanada/ If you're looking for some kind of emotional validation and the feeling that, "good ol' 'Steve' is taking care of my money, and he's just such a stand-up guy, and whiz with the markets. Really, it's a miracle he's in Calgary, he really should be managing a hedge fund in New York. We're really blessed he works for us." By all means, do so.

I've done a lot of research, and I have a good grasp of managing finances through reading /r/PersonalFinanceCanada and /r/investing. The big banks have incentives to push their own products which involve high MER % and don't necessarily represent your best interest. Note high MER % is not always bad. Anyway, if you're not willing to do the research and learn on your own, that is fine. I did meet someone who I thought was really honest and generally interested in helping people: http://www.bordenfinancial.ca/contact-us If you do contact him let me know.

My brother is a longtime advisor in the Calgary scene, having worked for BMO, RBC, and is now somewhere else less prominent to the average consumer. I won't list his name but will relay a few things. He has little confidence in Investors Group because he's seen too many people that have had your experience. Also, the Calgary investment scene is well networked among themselves... it's not an old boys club but they kniw of those flash in the pan types that circle around due to the oil and gas schemes. My brother asked me these questions when I was choosing where to direct my employer managed RRSP funds. How old are you? When I was younger, my choices were equity funds because I was young enough to ride out the boom bust cycles. Am I looking to buy a house, go back to school, set up a business? How much risk are you willing to take? That was related if I wanted GICs (slow, guaranteed return) vs equities. Long term goals: do you have kids that need an RESP? Do you want to retire eventually to another place that woukd make certain types of investments more prudent? What's going on with your family? This is not a nosy question or a grab for more business. It helps your advisor plan contingencies. Eg. Your spouse is going back to school, a family cottage under parents name needs to be transferred to kids, your parents are needing more care as they get older, etc. I left my last job with the company that had third party administration of pension and RRSP funds. My brother now manages my portfolio for me and the value has gone up 12% in the past year. While market correction is a large reason, his diligence and active management is the greater cause. I told him that I don't want to be involved in daily management so do as he wants with my portfolio... there is a trust factor there but I also realize I know nothing about investing nor do I care to learn. I get to monitor my portfolio online and I get immediate email notification of any changes he has made. My brother once told me he tells his clients they won't get rich quick off of him but he will get their portfolio sorted to weather the long term. If you're looking to day trade, do it yourself. If you want good long range advice, find an ethical, trusted advisor that is accessible and listens. Also, my brother is not a smooth talker but an earnest geek. Go for competence rather than the flashiest advisor. And if you're not liking the advisor's responsiveness in the first year, find someone else.

Most advisors are sales people. Are you looking for investment ideas or money strategy? Sometimes you might need more than 1 person. Also depends on how many zeros were talking about. If you have > 10M $ to deal with, send me a PM and ill refer you to someone who ONLY deals with advanced cases and is definitely not a sales man.

Are you a member of any professional associations ? I'm not a financial consultant but in many fields professional associations that grant designations or professional certifications have agreements with brokers to give good discounts.

I'm a Commercial insurance broker in the city, PM me and we can talk if you'd like. The other comment above about your professional association having a program through Hub or Marsh for your professional liability is likely correct. A broker in the city can do the property portion easily enough. The retroactive date on your E & O policy will be likely the most important part of anything you buy outside of policy limits and legal expense cover.
