Any suggestions for where to stay in Italy? We are going in September and want to explore different places but possibly set up a home base in one spot (open to...

I haven't been to Naples, so I'm not sure how it compares to Venice, but if you've never been to Venice, you absolutely have got to go. It's absolutely amazing. We did a tour of Rome, Florence and Venice with Insight Vacations years ago, and it included fabulous hotels.

We spent a few days at this agriturismo near San Gimignano. You can stay B&B or rent an apartment with kitchen. Great location for exploring Tuscany and Umbria and there is a town nearby with a direct train to Rome. http://www.poggiacolle.com/

Positano and Sorento on the Amalfi coast is so beautiful. We took the train to Naples and then did a private tour with this guy. It was awesome. http://www.angelodriver.com/
Tanya H. replied:
http://www.monasterystays.com/ is great for Italy (I used it in Rome). Many monasteries have modern guest houses where you can stay very comfortably for a fraction of the cost of a hotel and you don't need to be Catholic or even religious at all to stay. The room we had at the one we stayed with in Rome was huge with a 4-piece bathroom and a large balcony and it was just over €100/night for 4 people.
