When we first moved into our old house on Heatherside and discovered Parquet Flooring under the horrible carpet, we ripped up the old carpet and lived with the wood floor for a fair while, but I agree with the post above it was cold and easily scratched and as soon as we could afford new carpet, it was covered back up. My neighbour at the time, had hers beautifully restored and polished and was really happy with hers, so I think it is a personal thing.
