Hey! So I got my contact lenses recently too (a few months ago), so what I know is that the insurance covers the cost of an eye exam, but not the contacts or eyeglasses. I had an eye exam for about $80 and $40 was covered by insurance. I personally ordered my first batch of lenses (which were dailies) from opticien Antoine Laoune on saint catherines street, but they're not cheap tho. I ended up ordering monthly lenses online, through a website called Clearly, and got a decent price. You could try that out too.

Costco is supposedly pretty competitive.

If you have the prescription and know the brand that you usually use, order from contactlensking.com! It's pretty good pricing and gets delivered quickly.

I just got my prescription checked when I got an eye exam and ordered them from whatever discountcontactlens website is active in Canada. I'd say pay for the eye exam and consult at an optician, and then go online and order there. Cheaper than doing it in store and online they have all brands. ALSO: unlike in other countries (like the US), you don't need to have a doctor's prescription slip to order online, you just need to know what strength to get.
