I'm in search of a VW mechanic in our area. For some reason it didn't work out for my Karmann Ghia to go back to Panama City with Jeff, but I still would like to get it...
Kevin F. replied:
Sergio Casillas, I nearly bought an old timing light and compression gauge today at a thrift shop for $15. I backed down at the last minute and left because I don't know how to use them yet, and have limited time. James Adams may be coming over after work to look at what's going on. I'll let you know about Monday. I absolutely need to learn how to use those tools. I'm just getting my feet wet on maintenance of old VW's. Right now, I just want to get mine to a drivable condition.
Kevin F. replied:
James Adams came over this evening and helped a lot! He got the car much closer to holding idle (it actually would hold for 10-20 seconds at times). I've not been able to get it that close before. He said that it may have a vacuum leak at my intake boots, which are badly dry rotted, one of which has duct tape on it. I'm ordering the new intake boots tonight and hope to get them on in the next few days and try again. Thank you all for your input, and thank you again, James, for stopping over! Sergio Casillas, if you are nearby and want to swing by the house sometime, I'll show you the Ghia while my wife and I drool over your bus!
Kevin D. replied:
Kevin Fears call me at 850 206 3656. I have an idea for your idle
