Recommendations for books about great photographers I am not looking for autobiographies about great photographers, but more about their technique and the way they...

i know you said book, but there is an amazing documentary called "Manufactured Landscapes" by Edward Burtynsky "... beautiful art from civilization’s materials and debris. The film follows him through China, as he shoots the evidence and effects of that country’s massive industrial revolution..." http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/manufactured_landscapes/

I think [Photo-wisdom: Master Photographers on Their Art](http://www.amazon.com/Photowisdom-Master-Photographers-Their-Art/dp/0473150948) could be what you're looking for. From the Amazon description: *Photo-wisdom features commentaries from original interviews with world-leading photographers alongside exquisite reproductions of key images chosen by the artists themselves. The result is an unprecedented collection of 200 images showcasing each master photographer's work and their unique voice.* It has some great photographers, and the pictures are obviously amazing to look at. But what got me to buy the book was how Lewis Blackwell sent these photographers various questions regarding their processes and then published their answers with only very slight editing. It's a book chock full of primary source material, and I can't recommend it enough. Also, the book spans across a multitude of genres/styles. Portraiture, reportage, fashion, and on and on.

I really like Galen Rowell's books if you're into nature photos. They go beyond the typical "use this lens" discussion to dissect what it takes to create a really notable photograph. I really enjoyed these two: 1) The Inner Game of Outdoor Photography 2) Mountain Light

The Moment It Clicks, and Hot Shoe Diaries by Joe McNally are great if you want to learn about small flash lighting techniques. I haven't read his new one 'LIFE Guide to Digital Photography: Everything You Need to Shoot Like the Pros' but I've heard it's amazing.

Ansel Adams published a book called "Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs." He explains his methodology behind some of his most famous photographs, talks about his "eye," and discusses a little technical detail about the shot. You can probably get this from your local library system.
