Dana, I would recommend starting with a mid- to lower- priced 'Brother' brand. Singer is not the leader that it has been in years past. Arlington Sewing Machines, on Main in Arlington is a very reputable dealer with inhouse upkeep and usually gives beginner lessons with the purchase of a new machine. A little off the beaten path, but worth the extra effort. Nice people to deal with....Have purchased my last 4 machines from them.
