I'm just going to assume you're in south Austin so I can give you a real-life example, but regardless of where you are, you should be able to find similar care in other parts of the city. Would you be open to care that isn't necessarily full day but would still allow you to consistently have your child in care maybe 9-2 5 days a week? If so, it might be worth it to check out some Mother's Day Out programs at churches. For example, if you live in South Austin... Woodlawn Baptist Church has a T/R MDO program from 9-2 that looks like it is $170 a month (that's a steal). Website here: http://www.woodlawnbc.org/filerequest/6299 Kinney Ave Preschool is $405/month for 3 days per week (MWF 9-2) for Infants – 23 months. So, for $575 per month you're getting M-F care from 9-2pm. If your job is flexible (which it sounds like it's at least somewhat flexible now), that's a pretty good deal for part time care. Once your little one turns 18 months, you can also start using a drop in care place, like Kid Spa in Circle C or the other location is in Steiner Ranch. It is, I believe $6.50 per hour if you enroll in a certain amount of hours per month and on a drop-in basis. So, if your job schedule is unpredictable, you can drop your child off whenever you need between 7:30am and 10pm M-R and on weekends they are open until 12:30am. Closed Sundays. Hope that helps a little.

You could also try looking on NextDoor for a nanny share with other parents.

I feel for you. We have a 2YO doing in home and 4YO in pre-K at Sunset Valley. By the time it is all said and done (including after school programs), about $2,200/mo. The best way to find in home is to ask people you know who go to church. We don't go, but that is how we found ours. Also, start considering a vasectomy. :)

Based on what I've seen there is no such thing. Not if you want your infant to be safe at a licensed, hygienic facility. Sorry :(

Aside from some of the AISD-based daycares (which aren't year- round) just over 1 k per kid is about as cheap as they come for a reliable service.

Can you ask at your school(s)? ACC has very affordable care for enrolled students - and with the attractive price comes a waitlist. A long one.
Churches also can run a little cheaper than private daycares. I also imagine they would be more receptive to giving you a sliding scale price if you explained your circumstances. I have my kid in a private daycare, and I get a modest discount because I'm a teacher, which is nice. Every bit helps.
TX Workforce also offers subsidized daycare if you qualify (and, again, wait on a waiting list). Some licensed centers in town accept payments from TX Workforce. Start looking here: http://www.twc.state.tx.us/jobseekers/child-care-services
Remember that you can deduct up to about $6000 a year from your taxes for child care, but only if it's at a licensed center.

Holy f*ck!!! My goodness, how do you guys do it? I was EXTREMELY fortunate back in the early 80 s, 'daycare' was relatively new back then, and my Mom would. not. allow. it. We take care of our own! says the old school Irish grandma. She switched from delivering mail to nightshift in proces sing so that she could take care of my little boy. God help you.
At the beginning of this next school semester I would like to find a daycare that Grayson could visit a couple of times a week, to be able to play with other kids his...
