New to the genre, looking for recommendations I'm in my early 30s, I missed out on emo in it's heyday, aside from some stuff that I guess could be considered emo like...

Hey man, welcome to the world of Bass!
So there's definitely directions we could point you in, far and you might even hurt yourself...so getting a lesson with somebody who can watch you and evaluate you is really important, unless you're able to find a video that can show you the proper grip, posture and all of that stuff...
I've done private lessons my whole life and I now teach them, so I can't give you any recommendations of videos. But lots of people seem to really like Adam neely and Scott's bass lessons...
But yeah before you start diving in, make sure you got that technique stuff on point otherwise it'll be really difficult to do anything.
besides that if you're really new, I would suggest start by learning songs before you learn any scales. You need to familiarize yourself with the instrument and once you start playing a couple tunes you can start learning how the theory and all of that applies so. What I usually tell my students is make a list of five of your favorite songs and start with the easiest one.

Talkinbass is a pretty good resource. Straight to the point for the most part. He definitely provides some good exercises I still use for warming up. As for practicing finger placement on the fretboard, I usually just played scales and playing along to songs. Worked well for me at least.
