You can save most formats to a dvd that can be played in most dvd/blue ray players. Nero Burning Rom has a 'Recode' feature that I have used, (I'm sure there are hundreds of programs to use). Even if you just straight copy the format you already have to a recordable dvd/BR you will still have the files backed up. You should back up anything you can't replace fairly often because all hard drives fail eventually. The older they get, the more likely it becomes. Anyway, just make sure you know the format of the video you have (.avi, .mgp, .mp4, etc) and make sure your software can change from that format to DVD or BR. Once you find a program (free or purchased) you will likely be able to use youtube to findtutorials to teach you how to use it. Hope that makes some kind of sense...

Go to www.download.com and try out a program called ConvertXtoDVD. I love it and it's very easy to use imo!!
