For Clevelanders we went to the Chop Shop (Daniel), and my son sat still the whole time! It's decorated like a garage with huge t.v.....things to visually distract, and no salon smells. I highly suggest them!

We go to Pigtails and Crew Cuts as well and they work with Owen playing games on the phone. He used to cry and have to have me stand right there holding his hand and now he's used to it and just let's them do it. Tracy at Sports Clips sounds great too! I would recommend finding someone and just sticking to that person and place for a while so that he get's used to a place/person and knows what to expect.:)

Does it have to be a barber? My mom owns a hair salon on hwy 58. She has worked with children and adults with varying special needs. She can even book a time when there are not a lot of people around. She does whatever it takes to help them feel comfortable. The shops name is K.G.’s Hair Salon and the number is 423-499-8150 her name is Kathie. Tell her I sent you if you call.

Best barber for a fade?? I more or less “buzz” my hair — I end up getting something like a two on the top of my head and fade it down to a zero on the sides. Any...

Kirby at Pedro Williams on 9 th Street has been the best for me in Durham. I do a 3/2 fade with a taper to zero in the back and she's the only person who gets it right and doesn't miss any spots.

I read this as a Black man and in my 30+ years of existence I have never gone into a non black barbershop. I totally didn't realize that there are barbershops where a fade wouldn't be a necessary skillset. This has rocked my worldview and I have a new challenge for the year: go to a different babershop. Thank you OP!

Better Man's Barber Shop in Cary is pretty great, also the free beer
Ken_Thomas replied:
*Any* barber can do a fade. I think that's like Barber 101. I usually go to [Park's](http://www.thebarbersalon.net) because it's not pretentious, not obnoxious, reasonably priced, I never have to wait very long, and it's the closest shop to my house.
Quarlo_RNCNTNTO replied:
I'd highly recommend Renaissance Barbershop near Southpoint Mall. They are a Black-owned business. All staff are very skilled. They were recommended to me after a friend noticed a jacked-up SuperCuts incident on my head. Of course they are busy AF on the weekends so walking in might not be a option. The barbers are Black and Brown men. The clients are mostly Black men, but every time I've been there I've seen a few white guys and some women in the chairs. Hands down Dennis Best Men's Salon on University Drive. A little more expensive than Supercuts, but absolutely worth it ;-)

Not Durham, but Midway Barbershop in Carrboro (Rosemary St. near Carrburritos) will hook you up.

Bar Rocks on Main St is good and you get a free beer!

I have had anywhere from less than stellar, to downright bad, experiences at Rocks, Pedro Williams, Park’s, American Tobacco Barber Shop. The only place I’d recommend with 100% certainty and you’d not have to wait for a specific person or pay out the ass is Hondumex on Holloway. $14-$18 depending on taper fade vs skin fade with a straight razor. The downsides here are it’s kinda out of the way, they speak mainly Spanish but all of them can understand and communicate in English, and you might end up waiting quite some time. But personally I refuse to get my hair cut anywhere other than Hondumex as they kill it every time and I usually never go to the same barber.
DurmNative replied:
As questionable as some of the skill-levels may be that you can encounter at a Great Clips....there is a girl named Beca at the Great Clips at the shopping center at the corner of Hwy 98 and Old Creedmore Rd (technically in Wake County so not really Bull City) that does a fantastic job with that haircut (I do a 3 on top down to zero on the sides). Not only is she good at it, but she gets it done faster than anyone else I've experienced since visiting the barber shops on base when I was active duty. $14 (+tip).
