Hey there neighbours! We are new transplants from the UK and I am trying to get my head around what we need in terms of healthcare 101 - as a first point of contact, do...
Tanya R. replied:
I dont know about medical providers but I have an excellent dental referral, Dr Weir on Lincoln ave. Just a 5 minute walk and easy to get in, really nice, quality work.
Zara E. replied:
Tanya, thankyou so much, that's fantastic! I will be in touch with Dr Weir smile emoticon
Saskia H. replied:
You can ride your bike to Dr. Minkus, or take the El and then bus, if you are car free. The ride is lovely - take the bike path up thru the sculpture park on the west side of the river (just north of Devon) - he's just past the Home Despot, etc. We're highly biased and in favor of Dr. Minkus (after leaving our first pediatrician aka "the shot doctor"). wink emoticon
Beth R. replied:
Lakeview Pediatrics is great. I have brought my son there since he was an infant (now 2), and my newborn had her first appointment Monday. We see Dr. Alison Gehle who is just fabulous with our kids, but I have seen others in the practice on sick visits and they are all great (their bios are on the website).
Emily L. replied:
Swedish Covenant is local and awesome. You can find a GP (general practitioner) for you two, and a Pediatrician for the kids. Surely someone in the hood will have specific Dr recs there smile emoticon
Robyn R. replied:
As far as first point of contact, it is completely up to you as to whether you would like to use a family practitioner for you and your children or go the separate route-pediatrician for your children and a an "adult" doctor for you. You dont need a re ferral to see a pediatrician, just find one you like and make an appointment (easy right?). We just staryed seeing Dr. Robert Minkus for our pediatrician and really liked him. i would pick a few names, whether recommended or by location from your list if providers and set up some "meet and greet" appointments. good luck and if you need anything else feel free to message me!

I've also heard wonderful things about Dr Minkus. Very holistic and not alarmist.
Eileen F. replied:
Yes, Robert Minkus is part of the North Shore group, and he's amazing, and in Lincolnwood. A drive, but not a difficult one. His partners are all cool as well.
Julie M. replied:
I have a family doc for myself, Dr.Wesley Cook http://www.drjwesleycook.com/ . He is great. And my kids go to Dr. Janowiak at Lakeview Pediatric and I LOVE that practice http://lakeviewpediatrics.net/
Good Family Doctor Recommendation Anyone? Hey everyone!
I'm looking for a good family doctor. I work downtown Hamilton and live East Hamilton kind of near Gage Park so...
LongoSpeaksTruth replied:
In all honesty, not very many doctors are accepting new patients. It's a little easier to find a new doctor now then it was a couple of years ago. However, you will not just be able to pick and choose any doctor you like. You may have to accept whichever doctor is currently accepting new patients. Even then, you may have to put your name on a waiting list. HaHa :)

When I moved here, I was looking for a new doctor. I used this site, and found one at the 414 Victoria N practice. http://www.hamiltondoctors.ca/find_a_doctor.php

Not a recommendation specifically but if you have trouble finding a doctor try Health Care Connect. I'm in London and they found me a family doctor within a few weeks. http://www.ontario.ca/page/find-family-doctor-or-nurse-practitioner

Dr. Inderjit Singh is accepting new patients and he's in the area on kenilworth ave. I use him myself and I'm very happy with him and the office workers. There's also a pharmacy attached to it which makes it convenient for prescriptions. Good luck!:)

Not sure if they are accepting patients, I like the atmosphere at McMaster Family Practice Main at Bay. I like seeing a resident and they see me ASAP if needed.

Thanks everyone! I'll reach out and see if I can get in! Appreciate the help :)
iamsick_ca replied:
Check out http://www.iamsick.ca or download the iamsick.ca app... Search for doctors and turn on the "Only show family docs accepting new patients" filter. You'll then see a map with their locations, contact info, etc. There are about a dozen family docs accepting new patients within a few km of Gage Park.

Dr. Obaida Shahkhan at 10701 S. Ewing (in Dr. Saroj Verma's office); she saved my life last summer by treating me for a serious animal bite in the office and not making me go to the emergency room...she then treated my swollen arm/wrist for the next few months...probably saved my right hand! She is my family doctor now...a friend of mine just loves Dr. Verma...who used to be a certified Cardiologist (she treated my neighbor in the early 80's when I first met her at Trinity/South Chicago Hospital)...they're both very good internists...I switched doctors last summer after 25 years with an older East Indian Cardiologist/Internist who finally reached age 85...never thought I would like (AND TRUST) another doctor so much...Dr. Shahkhan did a full body bone scan, which I had never had YET...at age 69! I think I should've had one...the news was pretty good for someone who never took HRT (hormone replacements)...am getting ready to see her again for my annual MediCare wellness check-up....
Who has a pediatrician/ family practice they love? Really need to switch and am stuck!

Bianca A. replied:
Aww Gayla, good luck my dear. I was ISO of one as well. But Medicaid dropped me and now I am paying cash for one.
Shannon Orem No, they did not, I did not reapply but for the same reason, my pediatrician no longer wanted to see my unvaxed children. I did not find another who would see them and take my state insurance so I decided to not reapply. I will be looking to buy insurance, and see if it will be in our budget.
Does anyone know of any Family Doctor? Besides Chicago Family Health Center!?
Lucy S. replied:
I was a Katie t at CFHC for over 35 years! Thank God, I am now at UIC MEDICAL. The drive takes time getting use to but it's so worth it. The mediocre service I've endured for so long along with being part of Trinity Hospital has only made it worse. In the months I've been at UIC has given me the opportunity to see so many specialists who are experts in their field. Don't sell yourself short, take the drive and get yourself QUALITY care.
Lucy S. replied:
I meant to say I was a patient at CHICAGO Family health Care with Advocate Trinity

Dr Dayon at East Side Medical Health Center 105 th & Ewing. He's very good and staff is super friendly always same day appointments
