Psychiatrists in Vancouver Could somebody please recommend a not too expensive psychiatrist in Vancouver? Or therapy or anything related? Please do not make comments on...
TigerTankWank replied:
Call/drop by the AAC at VGH. It's worth it. They help. I was where you are and they helped me. Fuck the expense, you're worth it.
bridgemixture replied:
Psychiatrists are doctors. They are covered by MSP. If you need to see one urgently, you can go to a hospital emergency department or the Access and Assessment Centre at VGH. AAC is open 7:30 am to 11 pm. Also, AAC can refer you to [SAFER](http://www.vch.ca/Pages/Suicide-Attempt-Follow-up,-Education---Research-SAFER.aspx?res_id=474), a program that provides free counselling for up to six months for people who are feeling suicidal. PS if you go to emerg, I recommend VGH over St. Paul's. Also, if you go to one place and don't get what you need, you can try somewhere else.
dacefishpaste replied:
psychiatrists are always free since they are medical doctors. lots of options but if you are in crisis and live in Vancouver, AAC is a good option. if you have a good family doctor or regular walk-in clinic they can help you as well. let me know what area of town you're in and I can recommend some doctors and clinics I've had good experiences with. if you don't mind online visits, there's a free online clinic called Ubiquity Health. i've seen a female doctor and a male doctor through the service. both were great and knowledgeable about mental health.
VolupVeVa replied:
Please listen to all these good folks recommending you visit the ER or a doctor at a clinic to tell them you're feeling this way. You deserve immediate support and it shouldn't cost you anything under MSP. Take good care.
doomthreader replied:
Yes, VGH ER helped me a lot when I was in crisis. They referred me to SAFER, where I had counselling. I didn’t pay for anything. Yes to all of these suggestions! Please listen to them ❤️.

You're worth whatever rate for your well being. You can not put a price on your mental health. Jericho counseling has lots of experienced professionals that can help get you on the right path, whatever that path is.
OneBigBug replied:
I'll add on to the existing comments, which are excellent, that not only does the AAC exist, but if you're seriously considering ending your life *right now*, the VGH Emergency Room also has the Psychiatric Emergency Assessment and Triage (PEAT) program, which is new within the past year, and suitable for emergency mental health crises, as opposed to the AAC, which isn't quite so emergent.
I was in there with a friend a little less than two months ago. While I was sitting with my friend in the PEAT waiting room, a woman who was also waiting started crying. A nurse came over and asked if she was okay and if she wanted to talk. The woman responded along the lines of "Why does it matter?". The response, as earnestly as I've heard anything, was "Because *you* matter." It's hard to convey via text exactly how impactful that was. It probably reads as being rather trite. And I honestly couldn't say if it helped the intended recipient, but it sounded so genuine, and so...indisputable that it made *me* feel emotional as a stonehearted stranger.
To be clear, actually talking to the professionals is in very private rooms, and the waiting room itself is more private than the rest of the ER. I don't want it to come off as a place where strangers will gawk at your pain. It's not. They're very respectful. But I just wanted to share that these people are wonderful, they care about you, and will keep you safe if you need it. At least that's been my observation.
Also, as others have said, most things are covered by MSP. Psychiatric services that are pay-for *exist*, but they're the exception. There are people who are completely destitute and likely incapable of ever finding meaningful employment who are getting top-notch psychiatric care here. So please seek it out if you need it. Because you matter.

https://crisiscentre.bc.ca/ Please call here for help. The volunteers are trained to help you find the resources you need. 1-800-784-2433 And yes, go to any nearby hospital for help, they can refer you to the right department.
SJrX replied:
If you are in crisis and/or trying not to end it all you should call [1-800-784-2433 (Crisis Centre)](https://crisiscentre.bc.ca/are-you-feeling-suicidal/) . You can also go to a hospital right now or call 911. They should all be able to give you immediate attention and or provide you with next steps.
GoldHondaDrivers replied:
Do you have a doctor? They can refer you if it's an emergency
SmallKangaroo replied:
Generally, for a publicly paid psychiatrist, you need to be referred. If money is an issue (totally get it, I’m a student), calling 211 is a great step. They can refer you to local programs that are either offered at a reduced or no cost, and have a variety of supports they can give you referrals for. It’s a great first step for mental health supports If you are in immediate trouble, please call a crisis line. They will also be able to help.
hurrsadurr replied:
If you're a female (or female identifying), drop in to the Vancouver Women's Health Collective on Hastings. The nurses there are a great help for the most part and will give you guidance in finding someone or refer you to a program

I have a natural health store in town. That would probably be the best place instead of the typical "prescriptions'. The name is Merz Apothoxary. They are awesome and if I am correct the woman is a flowercologist. They are located in Lincoln Square

I absolutely love Dr v at Mathers clinic. And I like they work with several alternatives to treatment and can perscribe any medication. I have to take progesterone for my pregnancy but when I was reading about it I read some docs use it to help addicts in withdrawal. But in all honesty I tried everything and without methadone I'd probably b on the streets.

I saw you are looking for therapy? I go to the Center for Contextual Change around Halsted and Van Buren. They specialize in PTSD treatment but are super good for whatever you want. I think you're brave to ask such questions/suggestions online. I've dealt with a lot of judgmental people but I finally came out and was in the news paper for my 3 mental illnesses. Anyone trying provide information like they think they know what you need needs to stop talking...they are not open minded and have only a couple experiences to go on. Hope you find what ya need, miss cutie

found this too, which has some very useful info. http://www.ccc.edu/departments/documents/psychiatric%20 resources.pdf
Lisa P. replied:
Idk where you've looked and I don't know if they take medicaid (although I don't see why not) but Dr. Aaron Reichling from NMPG is an excellent psychiatrist and was pretty open when I used to see him. (I'm not by a computer or I'd give you a phone number.)
Julia H. replied:
I understand. Completely. Might be different PTSD story than you but this place I go to (been there 3 times after 5 years of therapy with other person) has changed everything!!! Check it out if you want online: Center for Contextual Change. They are also on call for phone calls anytime of day/night. Complex PTSD, bipolar, and conversion disorder is way too much for me and I'm sick of it. But this place gives you the tools to deal with it. I hope you feel better
Samantha R. replied:
Hi there. Psychiatrists can be trickier to schedule than therapists. Usually what happens is you begin work with a therapist. If you and the therapist feel medication is a good choice for you, you schedule an appointment with a psychiatrist. (The therapist will usually refer you to one.) And yes, it often takes a few weeks to get an appointment with them. I'd recommend starting with a therapist and going from there. Also, have you reached out to any of our mental health friends within the burner community? Heidi Meredith and Cynthia Bassuk are both wonderful choices, might offer you a sliding scale payment plan and at least point you in the right direction.
Quick question Chicago. Can anyone recommend a great psychiatrist? I think I need to try some different medication. I've got Aetna insurance if that helps. Let me know....

Why is it so hard to find a good psychiatrist? http://huff.to/1gO3GBz
Cheryl K. replied:
Impossible Heather Bill. And we actually have insurance that covers mental healthcare, but finding a good doctor who works with children and takes insurance is the holy grail.
