Can anyone recommend an electrician in JC? I'm looking for a licensed electrician for a home renovation project I've got going on.
Anyone know a reliable electrician?...

Mike Malfetone, go with no other. He wired half my house and put new panels in. Good pricing and great work. Also deals with all the permit crap. 201 600 7121http://mikemalfettoneelectric.com/

No specific contractor to recommend as I work with many of them and it would be unprofessional in my position to recommend a specific one. But what I would recommend is the following:
- Hand write a project scope. Do not verbally give instruction. Way too easy to misinterpret here. On both ends. Be as detailed as possible with the work you have to do. Specifically request all permitting and scheduling of inspections be performed by the contractor. Specifically call out that you request to hold 10% of the fee until completion of the project and successful inspection. Call out any special materials, brands, etc. if you have any preferences there.
- Get three separate quotes in writing. Low balls aren't always your best bet obviously. Consider things like if they showed up on time for the meeting. If they inspected the job before spitballing numbers. Etc.
- When you select a contractor, get a WRITTEN contract that explains scope (all items mentioned above), project schedule, expected completion date, payment terms, etc. this is imperative with any contractor-homeowner work.
I can't tell you how important this is. But I can tell you two things that CAN happen if you don't. One, you can flat out get taken for your money and no work is done. Two, and this happened recently in another town nearby, your house burns down. No permit. No record of work getting done. Work was cause of fire. Homeowners insurance cancels policy because homeowner allowed unlicensed electrical work on home since they had no legal record or paper trail of a licensed electrician doing the work!
- when the contractor gets the permit, make sure it is properly hung and non-chalantly call the city to confirm the permit is valid (there is a number on the permit) and for the scope of your job and address. (Contractors get fast and loose on this one all the time. Some will outright forge the permit. Some will apply for 'simpler' permits than the actual project scope to get by a more rigorous inspection. This can cause you headaches down the road. Be very careful here.)
- Tip a good contractor. Always. They remember you for that. Food and drinks go a long way too if they are doing the job well and on time. At the very least have some cold beverages and water on hot days. Remember, a life long relationship with a reliable contractor is a very valuable thing for a homeowner.
