I'm new to town and looking for a nice spot to sip and type. What are your favorite coffee shops in town? I'm looking for coffee shops that have smoking patios and that,...

The Root in Lakewood. Excellent baristas, cozy, middle of a great town, delicious coffees and foods of all kinds and really cool and laid back patrons. Couldn't recommend it enough. Edit: didn't actually finish reading your post. There are a few benches around the corner where you can smoke but it's not open 24 hrs. For those preferences I'd probably also recommend Common Grounds even though it's not nearly as good in my opinion

Here's a few on the west side: - Savor the Moment - great little family-run coffee shop, very casual and relaxed like environment and in my opinion they make the best "foo-foo" drinks around. - Common Grounds - a little more punk-urban style coffee shop, tends to be a little younger crowd. Lots of artist-type people hang out here, also a lot of folks in flannels who play hackey-sack and smoke cigarettes out front. - Troubadour - Coffee roasters that recently opened in Fairview Park. A little trendier and more upscale, but they roast their own beans and everything I've had here has been good. - Five Points Coffe & Tea - New place opening at Five Points here in the *very* near future that seems like it will be worth checking out.

What I don't understand is why you would want to be in public while trying to work. I'm assuming you're doing some project, which requires you to think about what you're typing. Why not do that in a quiet spot, like your bedroom? Coffee shops aren't as loud as bars, but it's not like they're distraction free either. Maybe I just don't get it.

can we have a moment of silence for the Case and Coventry Arabica? (all the Arabica's -- shaker square, Avon, and further afield) a great place to study, drink and talk, and play chess in a dark, quiet corner.

Frequently study around town at a number of different places. Here's a list if some of my favorites. Some have been mentioned by other Redditors. 1. Phoenix in Ohio City - cozy feel. Sometimes it can get a little packed and if you're not there early it may be hard to find a seat. 2. Loop in Tremont - one of my favorites because it has pretty good electrical outlet access, which can be important if you didn't charge your computer ahead of time or are there for a while. They also have indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a second floor. Only one time have I had trouble finding a seat here. 3. Civilization - Great coffee shop in Tremont. Outdoor seating with wifi access. The seats face Lincoln Park and make for a great view. Horrible outlet access though. I think there's only one or two in the corner. 4. Beviamo - Right by Barrio. They have smoothies and some other drink options. It's pretty small and there isn't a ton of seating but they do have a great cozy corner with a bunch of pillows that I like. Another suggestion: Try out the libraries in the area! Lakewood Library is great. I spent a lot of time at Rocky River Public Library growing up. I'm also a big fan of the Carnegie West branch of the Cleveland Public Library over on Fulton. I love the architecture. It's beautiful on the outside and has gorgeous pillars on the inside. They also have study rooms that anyone can ask to use. The only thing I don't like is that you have to ask to get buzzed into the bathroom. And don't forget about the Cleveland Public Library downtown!

As a barista, let me try to help: 1 and 1 a). Rising Star Coffee Roasters and Phoenix. Rising Star is my favorite due to the spread of shops from East to West as well as the friendliness of the baristas 2) Pour 3) Duck Rabbit 4) if you are Southwest of the city, Troubadour coffee is good. Don't ask for sugar here lest you want a lecture in fine coffee and how it can be ruined.

Where exactly is this "town" that you're new in? Tremont? Lakewood? Ohio City? Westlake? Euclid? Willoughby? People call all of these "Cleveland" but they are a decent haul away from Cleveland proper.

Common Grounds in west park is 24 hours and pretty weird. They don't have a "patio" but you can smoke out front.

Phoenix Coffee. They have 4 (soon to be 5) locations. East side, West Side, Downtown. All of them have a great atmosphere. My favorite is the Ohio City cafe on Bridge ave. it has a nice big patio and tables out front too. Also, debatably the best coffee in town.

It's not open 24 hours, but Rising Star is an awesome coffee shop on Murray Hill Rd in University Circle. It's a bit on the pricey side, but the coffee is really good and the staff is friendly. Plus it's quiet and a good place to type. ABC Tavern isn't a coffee shop, but they have a patio where you can sit and smoke. They're open till 2 am. They have a great local craft beer selection too. There's one in University Circle and another on W. 25 th in case you're on the West side.

Phoenix Coffee (http://phoenixcoffee.com) or Rising Star (http://risingstarcoffee.com/about/#locations) or Algebra Tea House (http://algebrateahouse.com) or The Coffeee House (http://www.uc-coffeehouse.com) on the east side. None open 24 hours though all nice spots great for a little sipping and computer time

Serious coffee snob here, and I love all things Root Cafe. It is the only coffee shop I go to that consistently blows me away, and I've spent plenty of time in San Fransisco and Seattle (great coffee shops, but Root always delivers the goods, every single time.) It tastes like it was roasted last week and picked one week prior. I don't know how they do it. The flavor of the food at The Root is always bangin'. We really got it good with them in Lakewood so I like to reward them with business. No, I do not work there. I'm just extremely grateful for their persistence.
