[Camping in Clarence fahnestock state park](https://www.stateparks.com/clarence_fahnestock_memorial_state_park_in_new_york.html) is pretty cool. You drive right up to your campsite, and they are dog friendly. They’re about an hour north of the city.

North south lake is great but may be hard to get a spot. Love hiking the escarpment trails but has been super busy since pandemic. Lots of day trippers now. Mongaup pond is not too bad and has a big lake with swimming but not so amazing for hiking. Check out the reserveamerica site to see what spots are available.

If you’re willing to go to PA, promised land state park fits all of the criteria. They have waterfront on sites on a peninsula aswell as a waterfall trail just north.

Car camping? Like pull into a site and set up next to your car? Lake George, Battleground Campground is a State Park campground. Tourism season probably hasn't ramped up yet.
jortbert replied:
We camped at Chenango Valley State Park last summer and it was lovely. I’ve actually been very impressed with every NY state park where we’ve camped. We’re heading to Promised Land State Park in PA this weekend. I can let you know if it’s worth a visit. If you’re ever up for a farther drive, Lake Erie state park is gorgeous. There are camp sites at the edge of a bluff overlooking the lake, so you can sit in the evenings and watch the sun set over the lake. It’s quite a trek from the city, though.

Whatever you do, avoid Beaver Pond campground like the plague. It's the only time the campground itself made me cut a camping trip short. [This book has never steered me wrong.](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C4GUVFC/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_tkin_p1_i0)

Are you sold on “camping” in the traditional sense with tent etc. or are you amenable to the way they can sometimes characterize it in New England: (a small fairly rustic cabin sometimes with plumbing, sometimes an outhouse etc.) ?

Kittatinny campgrounds is great. Go to their location in Barryville.

North-South Lake is cool. The Kaaterskill falls aren't too far away.

You might also check out [Hipcamp](http://hipcamp.com). We have camped at some really interesting spots through this site. I love the campgrounds around here. But there is a fair amount of people traffic at some.

I'm noticing a ton of sites are not open yet! What's up with that? I lived in Colorado for years, and would always go camping in April to avoid the crowds. That's especially important in New York... So many crowds.

Googled Missouri campgrounds still open and it gives me a list. Clicked on a few websites and they say they're still open for business. Just give them a call to make sure.
imakeholesinu replied:
They are shutting down state parks and likely camping areas are closed because they are non-essential. Stay home, deal with the stircrazy after this whole thing is over.
UF0_T0FU replied:
Try hipcamp.com. It's kinda like AirBnB for campsites and features stuff on private land too. You might have more luck there than in state parks.

Other options: * county parks * private campgrounds * BLM land, dispersed camping or at first-come first-serve campgrounds. E.g. [https://www.fs.usda.gov/recmain/mendocino/recreation](https://www.fs.usda.gov/recmain/mendocino/recreation)

Be aware, all NF around Tahoe and Mendocino state forests all overnight camping is banned as well as all forms of flame including camp stoves until at least Nov 30 th at the soonest. Check the USFS website before heading out.
Woogabuttz replied:
Plenty of first come, first served sites.
Set_the_Mighty replied:
There is a first come first serve EID campground across from the closed (long term maintenance) one at Silver Lake. I don't know if they are open, they ought to be since the FS campgrounds are open. It's just the dispersed camping and ignition sources that are currently not allowed on the Eldorado National Forest. Camping in established campgrounds is okay, though I don't know what the reservation situation is like, they've used Royal Elk as a concessionaire lately.

Butt Valley Reservoir, or other PG&E owned reservoirs tend to have availability.

I haven’t actually booked through them before, but when I was researching s recent trip I found that hipcamp.com had some availability even when the big parks didn’t. I think it is sort of like AirBnB for camping?
wandering_wondering1 replied:
I have had decent luck in the past with last minute reservations at National Parks (multiple times for Yosemite), State Parks and County Parks in California. I’m not very good at planning a year out but I’m great at stalking the reservation websites. Check the sites daily and you may find availability.
tighre replied:
I have been doing research around this as I'm on the same boat as well. I found that the KOA at Mount Shasta has some openings. I recently camped at Manchester State Beach in Mendocino county. There are some First come first served campgrounds at Lassen (Merrill Campground) that are still open. Not sure how quickly they fill up though.
Potential-Squirrel-4 replied:
Dispersed camping and First-Come, First-Served spots are your real options. These are mostly in national forest lands. You probably won't have much luck with FCFS spots on weekends. Every reservation spot anywhere near northern California population centers will be booked out as far as possible. Note: due to the fires, national forests have heavy restrictions - many are closed to camping, and approximately all don't allow fires.

From the TNF front page... “Dispersed camping within the Granite Chief Wilderness is allowed. Dispersed camping within 500 feet of the Pacific Crest Trail is allowed.” I’ve parked in Olympic Valley (was ok to park in the ski resort’s parking lot, no tow, no fees) then hiked up and over the ridge to Granite Chief Wilderness. Can drop down from the ridge into Picayune Valley to the west or travel along the PCT in the north or south directions. Very nice area. 2 hours drive from Sacramento to the resort. 6 ish miles to Granite Chief Peak. Fire smoke looks minimal at this time by looking through the resort’s webcams. Happy trails!
