Before you spend $$$ at a shop, pop the hood and make sure all the pieces of the air intake system are intact and attached like they should be. If the intake ductwork is in good shape, a MAF sensor is an easy part to replace.

I very strongly recommend Re-Born in SE for specifically VW care, I am extremely picky about my two TDIs and they have never disappointed over several years of service. They're reasonably priced, extremely well informed, great at communicating, and have both a comfortable waiting room and a shuttle. If you PM me I can give you my name and they'll cut you a new customer discount.

Double J Motorwerks did a solid job on my VW. Honest work that was done quickly at a fair price, I was very happy with them.

Thank you all! I am going to try to buy a part and install it myself (never done before) and if that doesn't work will be headed to Precision Motor Car to get an estimate and go from there thanks to your recommendations. I really appreciate it, I am trying to get my life together and Redditors have helped a lot. Thank you again and goodnight you guys!

I have been taking my 2001 Passat to [Precision Motor Car](http://www.yelp.com/biz/precision-motor-car-portland-2) since I bought it 5 years ago. Actually, my whole family has been taking our various Audi's and VW's there since forever. The owner and his son run the place, and are quality people. They always do top notch work and treat customers with respect. I can't recommend them enough.

For a VW Group automobile, check out [Fine Tuning](http://www.finetuningperformance.com/index.html) at like 140 th N and Aurora. Heard about them many years ago from VWVortex forums and have brought my car in for service there several times. Never felt screwed over, but they do tend to give you a mix of future service suggestions that seem to fluctuate between needs and things to trick out your ride (replace rubber with braided brake lines, etc).
