Battery storage is going to be the future but it's very costly at the moment and that's why not many companies are quoting on it. If you install a solar system with an SMA inverter then when prices on battery back up do come down, with demand, then you can convert your solar system to battery back up with addition of a Sunnyboy Island inverter but again the price of one of these is around $4,000 plus batteries. Installing a solar system to meet your daily power consumption is not a waste of money, you just have to manage your usage correctly. Use power hungry appliances during the day, run your pool during the day, change your lighting to LED. These are all practical things to help save money. Our company Key Solar Pty Ltd have installed over 3,000 system in the past 5 years and my husband Jeff has been an electrician for over 25 years. Solar is definitely worth the investment if you install the right system for the right price and manage it correctly. www.keysolar.com.au
Marion A. replied:
Hi Jay, we just used Key Solar Pty Ltd. Absolutely great. I do know them and have used their services before, but to put this into context. I had a 1.5 solar system installed by Origin Energy and got NOTHING out of it despite having the 44 cents. I got several quotes for a 5 kw system in because our bills are so high. Key Solar and one other were so critical of our original installation as we have a pretty flat roof and it should have been installed with brackets to raise it. None of them recommended these brackets this time round ( because it costs a bit more and would make their quote look high), however, Key Solar were very upfront, honest about all of this. Also, AFTER SALES SERVICE is important for us and most of these Solar Co's are purely motivated by 'sales'. I believe like you in supporting local business, but also want assurances of after sales service, which is guaranteed with Key Solar. Our system is producing so richly even in these lower sun days and getting more kw/day than we did in a few months. Unbelievable. Finally, everyone is staring themselves blind with the 44cents issue, instead of thinking about how much they stand to gain by creating their own power and then USING IT CORRECTLY. Jeff at Key Solar actually equips people with all the tips and information about getting the best out of the solar experience. My example is - my bill is usually around $900/qtr, I was lucky to get $50 quarter with my 1.5 Kw because it was incorrectly positioned. I now stand to gain savings of about $600/qtr or more, so do the math and then the 44 cents is irrelevant. FINALLY, my old system, when we took it down (only there 2 yrs) was a potential fire hazard due to the amount of debris and leaves lodged under it, PLUS, the conduits were all wearing and splitting because they had used materials that were not suitable for 'external' use. That is what happens when the big companies use sub contractors and sometimes the 'service' factor disappears. This is a general approach and I realise does not apply to all but is our personal experience, having dealt with a few.. Hope this helps.

We got a six kW system, cost us $12500. All German engineered and our electricity bill didn't change much. We used Eclipse Solar.

This company are excellent. They don't use cheap Chinese made panels. If you're going to get solar, you need it to justify its cost of installation, so you don't want cheap panels that have problems before you've even recovered your costs. Ask for Phil, he is really nice and happy to give advise on your options. http://www.solarpowerelectrics.com.au

Michelle S. replied:
Same thing happened to me a couple moths ago- first off we called our electric company but they take no responsibility- if there's no reading it's a fault with the panels they say. Got our electrician out to assess. It was the solar- and of course it was just 2 months past the warranty! Got a quote to fix and sent to our insurers which we could claim. Recommend JVK Electrical. 0410 689 029
