I had your same problem, here's a tip. Comb your hair while it's still wet coming straight out the shower, then apply your product while it's still damp. Also you don't need as much product as you think, too much will make your hair too heavy and it will fall out of place. When your hair dries, if it's already been combed perfectly in place it should stay that way all day. As for barbers, if you give any half awake hairdresser a picture of what you want you shouldn't have an issue, but personally I like to seek out the oldest looking barber I can find because I know he's cut that style 1000's times more than your 21 year old hipster at Dr. Follicles who just graduated barber school.

Temple Town on Johnston St in Abbotsford is really good for that sort of thing. $38.50 for a cut and a beer.

Black sheep barber, Sydney road, Brunswick is great. $35 for a cut and a beer. Guy knows his stuff.

There's another in Prahran called Barbaresso, it's on King at opposite Greville! No beer but free drink, they know their stuff and sell all the decent product they use!

Suite J on Acland St in St Kilda. Ask for Jae, he's the best.
