Looking for gym recommendations for an obese man trying to change his life I am a new resident of Austin and I'm looking for a gym that will help me make a positive life...
BombGeek replied:
I've gained and lost all my life... I dont think you will ever truly feel comfortable in a gym until you start going and feeling better about yourself. When i first started going to the gym and i was overweight i went only in the middle of the night. Which in retrospect at least got me in the door. Which is more than half the battle honestly. Remember... don't hurt yourself, you don't have to sprint, run, do hurdles, power cleans to get healthy and you don't have to rush it. You just have to do a little more than you did yesterday. I used to weigh over 700 lbs... the important part of all this man, is not the gym. Its nutrition. You can't outwork your diet, period.
shy_hindsight replied:
It's never based on the gym. Your dedication is what's most important. Get after it my friend, I wish you the best.
itsjustluck replied:
The YMCA has a pretty low-key vibe. I see lots of overweight people and newbs there. There's a good mix of overweight and fit personal trainers there too.
Murdock196 replied:
Honestly if you're just getting started there's nothing wrong with Planet Fitness. I know they get a lot of flack for not being a real gym, but for the price and what they offer, if you go everyday and use the equipment you'll get results. Save the expensive memberships for when you start getting in better shape and have a better idea about lifting and what type of workouts you enjoy most.
injineer replied:
Big Tex. Everyone there is incredibly nice and supportive. Everyone I've met there is dedicated to their journey, not really a place where people half ass. It's kinda intimidating, and I admit I wouldn't have joined if not for a good friend of mine's recommendation. There's not a lot of cardio equipment, but there are a lot of free weights and barbell exercises are great at keeping the heart rate up without damaging knees, joints, shins, etc. Good luck brother! Edit: also a vote for keto and r/keto. That stuff works, I swear by it. Losing weight is 70% diet and keto is a killer diet that doesn't make you hate your life.

Heya: * Do you have anyone you can go with? A friend? Coworker? Family member? (That has always helped me with consistency). * What kind of exercises do you like to do? * I've recently tried Anytime Fitness and it's awesome that it's a smaller gym, 24 hours a day access. * I've also used the UT Gym which has AMAZINGLY large facilities, even an indoor track, but can always feel busy and lots of college students. [They allow non students to also sign up](https://www.utrecsports.org/about/non-ut-memberships) * Both have been good, but location matters, and how you like to deal with others.
Joestac replied:
I've always hated gyms. I never knew what to do, I always felt I was being judged, and thought what I was doing was pointless because I wasn’t doing the right exercises. I started a weight-loss challenge back at the start of November at Orange Theory Fitness. The competition was for 6-weeks, I had to go at least 3 times a week and log all my food with MyFitnessPal. At the end of the competition I not only lost 34.5 pounds, I won the $500 grand prize since I lost the most % of weight. I am 6'5'' and was 331 at the start of the competition, now at 281, still going 3-4 times a week. OTF is great because it is an instructor led class that shows you exactly what to do, how to do it, and how long to do it. They help you if you have specific orthopedic needs, and all the instructors are fantastic and truly love helping people get healthier. I also mountain bike ride as much as possible, both have been great ways to lose weight. Also, like everyone else is saying, diet is key, logging all your food keeps you accountable for what you consume so you tend to make better choices. Wish you the best.
TheGAGLine replied:
I found the best gym is the home gym. It is always there beckoning. It offers no excuses like, it's too far, it's raining, it is probably too crowded. I needed one formula to lose weight: Calories consumed < Calories Expended The most difficult part was willpower. Part of the willpower is addressed supra.: your gym is at home and the formula is so easy to comprehend and potentially implement. Additional things that helped: visualize yourself as you want to be, keep track of progress (weight lifted, sets, reps, time, distance etc), understand that the first month of working out you will be tired. Finally, Newton's First Law: a body at rest, tends to stay at rest. A body in motion, tends to stay in motion You can do it and you will succeed. Good fortune
futurshox replied:
You could look at Camp Gladiator. It's a outdoor fitness group with hundreds of locations all over town. They are super welcoming of people of all fitness levels; they will modify any and all workouts to accommodate physical limitations and injuries. Their classes are usually really early mornings or in the evenings, but it varies a lot with location and trainers. There's nothing quite like getting your exercise under the stars. Campgladiator.com

Protip: Don't spend hours fucking around on treadmills or going on walks. That takes foreeevvver and does not burn that many calories. Get on a beginner strength program (I did [Stronglifts](https://stronglifts.com/5x5)) and you can lose weight while eating big meals and only spending 2-4 hours in the gym per week. I'm 5'11", 200 pounds and I have to eat about 3,000-4,000 calories per day or I start rapidly losing weight and strength. As a noob, you should be able to shed pounds while still getting stronger if you eat a few hundred less calories than you burn.
Stuff like [HIIT](http://www.bodybuilding.com/content/high-intensity-interval-training-the-ultimate-guide.html) would also be good, but you might have to lose some weight beforehand to do it properly.

darkchocoIate replied:
First off, welcome and congrats on starting the new journey. One thing I recommend is the Reddit sub /r/loseit. I've learned so much about what actually works for healthy weight loss.
I must also suggest planet fitness, because the memberships are cheap and the vibe is good. As you boost your fitness level you can look at gyms that offer more services, or look into things like CrossFit or kickboxing or something. Walking, can't recommend that enough. Buy a Fitbit, gradually work up to 10k/steps per day. I recommend weightlifting, research some dumbbell exercises and try to rely exclusively on free weight stuff like that. It would be pretty easy to find a simple routine to follow.
Lastly, for weight loss it's all about diet. Myfitnesspal has been great, track your food and meet the calorie goals. Exercise is still important for a lot of reasons, and someone explained it to me well once: a normal workout is basically the difference between small and medium fries in terms of calories. Diet is the key, exercise helps you get there.
n0teye replied:
Alongside your exercise I highly recommend looking into controlling what you eat better. The HEB Meal Simple meals are great for this! They range from $5 - $9 for a meal you only have to warm up in the oven before eating.
Keeganwherefore replied:
As others have said, it's all about diet. Both of my parents lost a significant amount of weight through weight watchers. Even after they left the program, they were more mindful about food. Once you lose the weight, I can't recommend the Austin Bouldering Project enough, it's intimidating when you go in, but the people there couldn't be nicer or more helpful. It's expensive, but worth it.
tacofficionado replied:
start with your nutrition and go from there. props for getting started. no one who is worth a damn will be making fun of you at the gym. WE ALL START SOMEWHERE! best of luck!
Kleenex22 replied:
Honestly i would start with a diet first. Keto is a life changer and actually doesn't require alot of exercise. Start there and then work towards a gym membership
SECAggieGuy14 replied:
Where abouts in town are you looking? There are a few 24 Hour Fitness and LA Fitness chains around town that would be good. One thing to note, a lot of gyms will give you a 2 or 3 day free pass to try it out so that's also something to consider if you want to test a few out to see which you like best. Congrats on your decision to lose the weight. I did the same too, many years ago and I haven't looked back!
KrabMittens replied:
Anywhere with an exercise bike. Eat correctly, mostly just less and pedal pedal pedal. You can watch, listen or read while doing it. It's very low barrier of entry and quickly starts delivering a high that will motivate you. I lost 80 pounds very easily this way.

If you live up northish, check out RetroFitness.
I've been going for a while. The manager is very nice and teaches a class or two. I've enjoyed everyone that I've come in contact with.
There is a cinema where they play one movie a day on a projector while you get your cardio on. This is where I spend most of my time as I can get lost in my workout easier. Inside the room are a few treadmills, bikes, and ellipticals.
There are some great trainers and, if I remember correctly, you get 1 one-on-one so they teach you how to use the equipment. They also keep their machines very clean!
There is also an app where they have contests nation wide and reward you with points each time you go. It might take a while to cash out for a prize, but I find it pretty cool.
The first day is free if you want to go and check it out!

Hey bud - drive down to the green belt and just walk for 30 mins or an hour or as long as you can. It's free, it's outdoors, and there are nice people there. I just don't ever feel good in a gym!
Lekili replied:
I'm sure some of these have been mentioned, but I'll go ahead and list a few I think would be great. First off it all depends on where you live in Austin, because convenience will really help you go more often. North-ish Austin off Anderson Mill is Gym One, small gym with a ton of trainers. Really great for someone new looking for help, the staff are wonderful. If you live in pflugerville, FTA Gym is great! Again great trainers and facility. I saw Big Tex mentioned and they really would be a ton of help. Or if you're looking for a great community feel any crossfit gym will really help you down a rewarding path. Steer clear of big corporate gyms where you're just a number. If you walk through the door and they know your name it's a good sign they care. And as a plus you're supporting a local business. edit: read through some other responses and I'm not sure why everyone is telling you to just stay home, walk and eat right. I'm sure you already know those things will help. I think you're on a better path though. If you want to go to a gym do it! It really can help you create better patterns in your life and make plenty of supportive friends as well.
woppinger replied:
Any gym will be able to help - the important thing is actually going regularly, so pick the one that's the most convenient for you, say on your way home from work. (In the meantime, getting out and walking every day is free - and there's beautiful weather forecast for the upcoming week...)

I cannot understand what you are working towards because I have never battled with my weight. I do, however, want to give you encouragement! Going to a gym can be very intimidating! I used to be so afraid to go to a gym (I am and was the super scrawny guy). I found that most people in gyms are super helpful and are not a judgemental as you might think. As others have said getting to the gym is half the battle and everyone there knows that struggle. Good luck!
Captain___Obvious replied:
A tip if you can, get into a community and be accountable to each other for diet. It helps. Working out can help, but not as much as diet.
catgirl320 replied:
Whichever you choose it has to convenient for you and have facilities you actually want to use.
The 24 hour fitness near Costco on Wm Cannon is a nice facility (or was when I went there a few years ago). It has pool, lift area, cardio area. If you get the 2 year membership certificate at Costco it works out to something like $18 a month so that's the best deal for variety.
My husband uses planet fitness. Since he only wanted a treadmill for running and a lift area it is adequate for his needs and the cheapest option near us. Tbh I don't think he ever looks at the facility itself so he wouldn't notice about maintenance etc.
For a personal trainer I recommend this guy:
https://www.thumbtack.com/tx/austin/personal-trainers/personal-training-mighty-fit He works with a wide variety of fitness levels, and is very encouraging.
Most facilities offer a free pass. Do that first to be sure you like the equipment, place's vibe, level of cleanliness and maintenance etc.
econgirl8 replied:
What area of Austin? Because of traffic, you'll want to pick a gym as close to you as possible. Group classes really help motivate me (I love spinning, good high-energy vibe, easy on the knees), so if you think that would help you try joining a gym that offers them with a good schedule.
EloeOmoe replied:
I went from 300 to 200. I used a prescription weight loss pill that pretty much worked well for the first month and then I got used to it and it quit working. That + eating only grilled meat and green veggies + Planet Fitness. Lost 100 pounds over the course of a year. PF is a good beginners gym. They are very heavy handed when it comes to a certain type of "gym attitude". Just stay the hell away from their free pizza nights.
my_akownt replied:
I encourage you to check out r/bodyweightfitness . It's much cheaper and more time efficient than a gym and you can build some pretty respectable strength and do some neat things with your body. I use the phone app to track workouts and honestly it's just super convenient. Sometimes just going to the gym can be a hurdle, but that hurdle doesn't exist in BWF.
AlmoschFamous replied:
You won't be successful in the gym unless you are 100% doing it for yourself or have a long term goal in mind. Also don't be afraid to ask the super huge guys for help or questions. They are generally the nicest and love to talk about working out.
lol_b_wut replied:
Come try Jiu Jitsu with us at Ignite Fitnez! We're a tight knit group and have bigger guys. It's a cool culture and we are inspired to be healthier all around. As mentioned before, nutrition is 90%. If you fall in love with BJJ, you'll want to optimize for it. Thus, you'll eat healthier and treat your body well.

The YMCA - it's low key, inexpensive, and if I recall correctly, new membership comes with a free fitness consult. They also offer personal training for reasonable rates. I cannot speak for other locations, but I love the southwest location at 5:30 am. It’s all but empty, and at least half the folks there are retirees. Headphones, Netflix, and zero judgment – it doesn’t get much better than that. Coming at this as someone who's been dangerously thin, obese, and everything in between - don't start out running, don't grab heavy kettle bells and start swinging, and don't join a boot camp that meets in the dark with 15 other people. In short - don't get hurt. Your back, your knees and your shoulders should be lifelong companions. Be nice to them, and they’ll be nice to you when you are ready for running, kettle bells and burpees. (Really, is anyone ever ready for burpees?) Nutrition, of course, is key. If something like Weight Watchers doesn't appeal, check out My Fitness Pal or any other number of free apps. Start tracking what you're eating, assess, and develop a plan. If you cook, you can do this, enjoy yourself, and not wilt at the sight of a food truck. Check out http://www.skinnytaste.com/, http://www.cookinglight.com/, http://www.foodnetwork.com/healthy.html... Google “salad in a jar” – it’s a mom/pinterest thing, but my husband swears by them. Keep apple slices, celery sticks, pineapple chunks, whatever floats your boat prepped and in the ‘fridge for snacking. If you don’t cook, My Fit Foods is a good option, as are those pre-portioned meals at HEB. If you’re at a full service restaurant, ask that your entrée be prepared without oil or butter, pair a 4-6 oz filet with a baked sweet potato (butter on the side) rather than a loaded baked potato, choose red pasta sauces over creamy pasta sauces, etc. Your life doesn’t have to become a blur of broiled chicken breast and brown rice, but odds are you’re going to have to start swapping out old favorites for new ones. Long and short – you didn’t gain it all at once, you’re not going to lose it all at once. Slow and steady, enjoy the journey, and best of luck.:)

Hey man. Whatever us salty bastards say in this sub, and whatever you decide to do, good on you brother. Recognizing that change needs to be made and deciding to make a change are the biggest steps in doing positive things in life, in my opinion. Wherever you go, and whatever regiment you decide to take on, stick to it, and don't look back. Good for you, man. And best of luck.
ModsAreCuntz replied:
Step 1 - Walk more. Clock your steps... aim to beat it every day. You'll get to a point where you're just moving... and then to beat the count you'll inevitably have to start jogging -- when you feel like it. You're only competing against yourself. Whatever you can do the first day... do it again... do it a little better... keep a log and take pride in the fact that you're improving.
Step 2 - Fix your diet. This is how you lose weight. Working out... it won't do shit if your nutrition continues to be bad. Cut as much sugar as you can -- with some exceptions... a glass of orange juice or an apple won't kill you. Generally speaking anything that's only got one ingredient (steak, banana, egg...) are better than foods with a lot of processed ingredients. Anything marketed, manufactured... avoid that crap.
Step 3 - Talk to your friends, talk to people. Make sure you're not in it alone. Have people who can support and encourage and hold you accountable. If you don't have anyone who can support you... keep a journal. Document your activity, how you eat, etc. But ideally find a friend or an over-eating group to check in with.
Don't hate yourself. You will fuck up. It's not about a specific day... it's about months of healthy choices.
Have patience.

I absolutely loved Hyde Park Gym. Lots of great equipment and a very accepting environment. Don't be intimidated by all the "olympic style" lifters that go there! Everyone is nice as are the trainers. Please remember that if you are *really* obese, the best thing to do is simply walk and cut calories first. Lifting weights can be terrible for your joints if your really big. It takes shockingly little to lose fat when you're real big
sophistry001 replied:
Honestly if you're sorta beginner level just choose one that's not too outta your way and has hours you like. I prefer Golds since they have about a dozen locations around Austin, but I also liked Hyde Park Gym prior to joining them. Download MyFitnessPal and track your cals, more important than anything you'll do in the gym. adherence+consistency>diet>lifting+cardio

If you're looking for a supportive community, look into Danes body shop. The workouts are pretty intense, but each class is led by a personal trainer so there is structure and guidance from the beginning. The trainers are the nicest people ever and they're always happy to offer extra help. There are some crazy fit people who go there, but that's what helps motivate me. It's also on the pricey side, but it's a fraction of the cost of working with a trainer one on one. I love it.

If you're up to working out with a group of people, my favorite group in Austin for bodyweight/HIIT style fitness is Motiv8. It's not a gym, but more of a bootcamp type of workout. The cool thing is that the coaches are really good about talking and working with you one-on-one, so it's kind of like having a personal trainer without having to actually pay for one. They've got several park locations around Austin (Dick Nichols, Zilker, Ramsey Park, etc) and some really nice people to workout with. I wasn't in too great of shape when I started, but no one judges. You can check out their [website](http://www.motiv8 fitness.net) if you want. Anyway, good luck!

Exercise is great and all, but the key to weight loss is diet. Depending on how obese you are, the most important weapon for you will be a food scale, and logging calories. Do this for a week with your normal habits.

I'll just give you one piece of advice. it's absolutely correct and would make your weight loss easier by far. but you probably won't listen.
don't worry about exercising. just count and cut calories. you will lose weight as fast as you like this way. exercise when you're slim. not to get slim. exercising to lose weight is crap compared to calorie cutting and harder to stick with and it's results can be obtained by just cutting more calories.
it's purely about calories in calories out.
plus cardio when you're way over weight puts massive Abbas unesecary strain on your heart.
Bloodfoe replied:
If you have the means, I highly suggest Crossfit City Limits. Kyle and Blake are knowledgeable about exercise as well as nutrition. '2 visits per week' memberships are from $143/month to $123/month (if you make a year commitment). So if you commit for a year and go twice a week, you will be paying around $14 each session.

Hey brother. I don't know gyms for nothing, sorry - I've had lots of luck walking my own self around some of the parks lately, and gradual gains on controlling my diet.
Decidedly in the realm of free advice, so take this for what it's worth - be generous with setting your first goals when you're building habits.. I've had some modest success lately, and I can't stress it enough - super easy-to-achieve goals is an excelent way to build momentum. Like - silly easy. 5 minutes in the gym. Walking out to the corner of your street. cut back one soda a day.
Anyhow. Sorry to intrude, but it's a bad trait of mine here on the internet. I absolutely wish you the best. Kick it's fucking ass!
