I'm a coffee shop addict, haha so here are some of my recommendations...
1) Homer's in South KC, in the Red Bridge shopping center. I could walk there from my house if I wanted to -- it's never too crowded, and the coffee's good. And it's locally owned!
2) The Roasterie -- two locations, one across from Town Center (I think they're calling that little strip the 119? Something?) and of course the location in Brookside. Great atmosphere, both are usually pretty crowded.
3) Westport Coffeehouse. I actually have only been there once, but my dad's cousin owns it, so I feel obligated to plug it.
Hope that helps a little! There's also a little place in Waldo, can't remember what it's called, but I really want to try it out!

I live in Lee's Summit and go to school at UMKC and on the way home I'll often stop at Benetti's coffee in Raytown. Great little coffee shop.

It's not popular (or even in a nice neighborhood), but try out Eleos. They roast their own stuff, and it's free trade. Free Wifi (which Broadway can't boast).
In search of: restaurant, bar/brewery, or coffee shop with private or semi-private space with no fee to reserve/use. Small group, so space doesn't need to be big. Ideas?

Smokey Row has a small side room, Java Joe's downtown has a large theater space (they don't charge but if you get catering it needs to be from them). The Red Monk, upstairs at the Royal Mile, can be a good space if you're there earlier on a weeknight
