Hi. We're looking to purchase a 105 yr old house in Des Moines. The exterior needs to be painted. It has lead paint. All the painters giving us estimates are telling us...
Nicole S. replied:
Erin if you don't mind, my husband and I have a painting business, Sparks Painting. We would love to come look at the home and talk to you. Call Rick@515-720-7562.
Brian M. replied:
You’ll definitely want to be sure to talk to some painters who don’t also install siding as part of their business... :) Maybe there was some miscommunication from the painters you talked to though. If the house has been pressure-washed (which is currently illegal on a house that could contain lead paint as it spreads chips everywhere), it could take weeks or months to dry out the siding and the wall behind it enough to paint; in that case you’ll want to work with a painter who knows how to use a moisture meter, and wait until you’re under 15% in multiple test spots. A few articles that may help you out: http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/Content.aspx?dsNav=N:4294963828-4294963805&dsRecordDetails=R:CS4236
Turns out the message isn't working. My friend who is an interior painter recommends getting references for painters from Diamond Vogel paint store. Be wary of overly eager contractors - this is a busy season and good painters should be busy right now.
Victor T. replied:
Erin, this group has a website as well. On it is a list of tradespeople that have been used and recommended - even painters! http://renovatedsm.org/business-directory/ I have used Marc Cochran on multiple projects and have always been happy.
Does anyone have recommendations for a professional house painter for the EXTERIOR of our house? We're hoping to get a couple of bids... thank you!

I could help you with who not to hire, my husband works at Glidden paint. If you want to make sure there are no horror stories??

I echo CR Painting. Caleb Roney is a great guy and treats his customers well.
Suggestions for a good painter and cleaning service or private cleaning person???
