One of our mommies is looking for some advice on how to introduce her dog to their new baby. Anyone have some advice or perhaps a referral to a professional dog trainer...
Shannon S. replied:
as long as the dog never sees the new baby as something bad it should be a smooth transition. We always make sure our dog gets to give the baby a smell but not a lick. Don't set the dog up for failure, never put him in a situation that will be too tempting. Training shouldn't be necessary, but obedience classes are always a bonus. Blue Ribbon Canine in Dorval is great, and tri L kennels in hudson if you are off island. both offer group and private classes

The most difficult time will be when the baby starts crawling. Even a very well behaved dog can be unpredictable near a baby. Always have the dog within arms reach when the baby is around. I own two Australian Shepherds and my daughter is almost 11 months old, so we are going through this now. We also bought a security gate so we can let her play on the floor sometimes without having to watch the dogs constantly.
