I would suggest my husband.... Dr. Yaniv Elharrar from the West Island Therapy Centre 514 696 0948. He specializes in psycho education evaluations and would definitely be able to help you with your decision to derogate or not.
Stephane B. replied:
Thanks Mat! I would be happy as a child psychologist to discuss this with you. it is am important decision and you must consider each child independently. Also, the decision to derogate is not just up to parents. The are strict admission guidelines emitted by the minister of Education that we need to follow. Call me if you wish to discuss this further. We offer psychological assessments for children at a great rate over the summer. 514-620-3535 at Clinique PsySanté

Our daughter was evaluated by Dr. Yaniv Elharrar and we chose to push her forward. I think it comes down to knowing your child and knowing what will work best for you and your family. Our daughter isn't "gifted" but she has always been able to be strong in her current cohort of students (even though she is the youngest). I think where we see it the most is socially - especially when she interacts with friends who are the youngest in a family and often exposed to more at a younger age. That just takes a bit of intervention of our part as parents - but it works for us and works for her.

There was a talk on the last iMothering 2013 by a clinical psychologist named Andrew Fuller who spoke on raising people - creating resilient families. He did mention the importance of letting boys start school later as they benefit from the extra year of maturity and brain development, which is slightly different than girls at this age. His site and resources are here : http://www.andrewfuller.com.au/index.php?Do=ContentView&pageno=100

I derogated my October 10 th daughter and it was the best thing we ever dud for her! She is going into grade 4 and was top of her class last year, won a bunch of academic awards, and was even class president! But she was READY. Not all kids are, especially boys. That being said, my son is a September born kid and the youngest in his class and is doing exceptionally well. You know your child best, go with your gut! As for referrals, I highly recommend Dr Yaniv Elharrar at the West Island Therapy Center. He will not recommend derogation if he doesn't truly believe it us best for the child.

Hi, I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I'm a psychologist on the West Island, but I only work with children. However, I would highly recommend my colleague/co-worker, Dr. Lora Moller, who is a clinical psychologist and would be able to help you. Our offices are located in the office building beside the Holiday Inn in Pointe-Claire. You can reach her at 514-426-8426. I also want to clarify that psychologists are not medical doctors and cannot, therefore, prescribe medication. Dr. Moller can communicate with your family doctor, who can provide the prescription, if need be. I hope this helps…
