Recommendations for jeweler in CBD or online for an engagement ring? Does anyone have a jeweler they would recommend to get a custom made engagement ring?

My wife got a replica cast of her grandmother's ring for her engagement ring from Klepners on Little Collins St. They did a wonderful job. See http://www.klepners.com.au/

Two of my friends just got married and bought rings from 1791 Diamonds (online group). Gorgeous ring, and they were really happy with the service (we chatted about it because I mentioned I'd be scared handing over that kind of cash online, but apparently they were really good customer service wise, always communicating etc). They do custom stuff, too, apparently.

Over the years we have had several pieces made by [Robert H Parker](http://www.robertparker.com.au/) and have never been disappointed. We have had several friends and family members also use them and they are amazingly good. They will guide you through every step of the creation of what you want, go over in as much detail as you want.

The only place I found in Melbourne that was close to online prices was http://www.rubytuesdayjewellery.com.au. Everyone else was expensive and/or gave me bullshit info (like telling me palladium was more expensive than platinum, that it's reasonable plain titanium rings cost $200, that certain metals can't be cut off in an emergency, etc). They are not in the CBD though but I got an initial quote via email and they said they could organise postage but I ended up going there. Friends recommended them to me. Look up metal prices beforehand too, to see the cost per ounce as it helps to work out if they're full of shit.

Pieces of eight do custom made engagement rings and my fiance was really happy with hers. Good service and price depends on the artist you go with. http://www.piecesofeight.com.au

Diamonds are mostly scams. Most are of crude quality and most dealers wouldn't even give half the cash you paid for them.

I bought my now-wife's ring at Janai Jewellers on Collins St. It's not the classiest looking place in the world but in the end they worked out quite well. I was quite up front about possibly purchasing online and the salesman was able to come up with a competitive quote compared to what I was thinking of getting from www.bluenile.com. All the agreed styles, prices and timeframes we agreed upon were met. Plus if you are getting a custom design they will give you CAD drawings to get a better idea of dimensions and final appearance. Overall we were quite happy.

Rule No. 1 on saving money on an engagement ring, is stay the fuck away from the entire scammy industry that is diamonds. The value is so low it is impossible not to be ripped off. So find another stone type. If you want something clear, look into moissanite. I couldn't find any in Melbourne with a decent website. But used these people and am very happy: moimoi.com.au
